Earth Defense Force 2017

Not sure if any of you guys have played this game, but it was a little niche action title that came out shortly after the 360s launch. It's actually a sequel to a PS2 game and there was a SNES version too, although that one was a shooter.
This game is really simple: aliens are attacking, blow them the fuck up. That's all you do but man, is it ever fun. Graphics are OK, there is only one city and maybe three or four other basic levels, enemies really aren't very diverse (I'm 20 levels in of 53 right now an I've only seen about 6 different ones and 2 or 3 "bosses"), AI is pretty basic.....but really, it doesn't matter. Remember when you played a game 'cause it was just fun as fuck? Well, that's what this one is. The fact that you can play two player (vertically) split screen just makes it that much better.
EVERYTHING in the city is destructible. The aliens will climb up them and pound you, so it very much helps to demolish the buildings around you. And you're not just getting attacked by two or three aliens. It's not uncommon to have 30 or 40 of them on the screen as well as maybe a dozen other EDF members (NPCs). You wanna see slowdown in a next-gen game? Trying playing co-op and running into a group of 30 enemies with your bud and have them shoot at you. The action is INSANE at points.
And there are over 150 different weapons in the game and 6 levels of difficulty to go along with the 53 levels. Makes for differing strategies based on what you have and what level you're playing on since there are about 7 weapon types and very differing weapons. You get weapon "powerups" during the level which get you the weapons (as well as armor ones which give you health increases) and different weapons will be available in different stages and levels of difficulty. There are two levels above "hard" and that can be pretty tough in parts, even with two players. You'll find yourself retreating quite a bit while pounding the enemies, which are RELENTLESS in this game. I promise, you will be challenged if you try it on hard or above.
This game is down to $20 new and much less used (I got it for $8 ). I'm only 20 levels in and it's already been worth it....and I"m not even half way yet. At the very least rent this game, give it a shot if you like a good old-fashioned action game. For that price, I say save your money and just put it towards the purchase. YOu're gonna play it for longer than the rental period 'cause it's a freakin' long and relatively hard game. It's really worth it. It's a shockingly good game...as long as you just play it and don't over analyze it.
The Gamespot review pretty much sums up my feelings towards the game:
