Wii Storage solution coming:

All can say is that it is ABOUT time that something was announced. I mean, it is not even THAT much more space that's needed, maybe another 2GBs. From an interview with IGN:

On a related note, Iwata offered a tidbit sure to excite Wii owners who have already run out of system storage space. "Statistically speaking, it is true that there are a small number of customers who feel that the flash memory is too small, while many others find that they have plenty of memory," he said. "However, because this small number of people are none other than the most avid players, we know we have to review the best possible solution to eliminate their inconvenience."

Wii storage solution: $20 2GB SD card. 'Nuff said

But they don't allow VC games on there, do they? That's the stupid part

That's not a solution. That's not even a proposal for a solution. That's corporate-speak for "we know it's a problem, and we have no idea what we're going to do."

Keep in mind this is Nintendo talking, and Iwata of all. Nintendo normally will completely dodge making any form of a statement on any issue that they don't have solid plans for; and will dodge most issues which they do have solid plans for.

You can store the games on the SD card but you cant play them from it. I filled my space a long time ago, so I have probally a dozen or so backed up to my SD card, I swap em out as I feel like playing em

Ok, good. Then there's really no issue IMO. You can get a 4GB SD card now for under $40 increasing your storage space by 9x.

NES games maxed out at what, 8Mbits, and SNES at 48Mbits (Tales of Phantasia), so they take up a fraction of the internal memory. N64 ones not so sure of. I know that Mario 64 was only 4MB at the time but if I recall recorrectly, didn't they max out at something along the lines of 64MB or something for RE2?

Basically, unless you're a mad downloader of VC titles, this won't be much of an issue. Particularly considering you can just re-download them later and it takes a significant number of titles and saves before you even get to that point. You're likely done with the game then anyways.

I think it's gonna be more of an issue when the Wiiware comes out and you have all of the newer games downloadable. Those gotta start hitting 100MB plus, no big deal if you have a 360 HD but a huge issue when you've only got 512MB of internal flash RAM.

Well I know that until Castlevania came out on arcade, the limit for a release on it was 50mb, so most Arcade games arent that big either. I am sure WiiWare is going to have similar restrictions.

Wow, it only has 512mb of internal? Flash is so cheap nowadays, they could have beefed that and still kept the same price tag... They just WANT to sell you add-ons...

One of the main reasons I buy VC games is for the convenience. I don't particularly find switching games in and out of an SD memory card to be convenient. I am also one of those people who buy a lot of VC titles and I plan to buy a loit of WiiWare titles too. So yes, I am VERY interested in any possibility of an expansion.

For Wii Ware, I am very interested in the possibility of this being finished:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPA4BR8o5_o">Well, polished up of course</a>

N64 games were normally 16 MBs, with most of the later games around 24-32 MBs; and a few rare occaisions where they hit 64 MBs (RE2 and Ogre Battle). Though keep in mind, just a few N64 titles is a major portion of the drive, not to mention a lot of Wii games use significant portions of the drive; Smash uses a large chunk.

I mean, it is not like it's impossible to unlock the memory card for direct usage, some games play Mp3's off the memory card. They just haven't.

Switching SD cards? I saw an add for a 2GB card for $10. You buy it, stick it in the system, and leave it there. If you run out of space on the internal flash ram, move some games to the card. You don't even have to move your ass off the couch

While I agree that the 100GB HDs in the other two consoles are a bit large, it seems like they should have at least figured out a better solution for this beforehand. Using 512MB for everything is soooo last console ago. Downloadables are the wave of the future for consoles, so Nintendo really needs to keep up.

From the other point of view, they have been RAKING in the cash due to the fact that the console came out at a mass-market price of $250. Even an increase of $5 to upgrade to 2GB of flash ram would have changed that. And they did provide the universal SD card solution, just don't allow you to play directly off of it. At least they're not making you hack the system to use a $10 2GB card.

And I really don't think they thought it would be THIS popular with people to download the VC stuff.

I would prefer to have the convenience of all of my titles available at all times rather than having to swap files in and out. That's my issue.

Actually, I wouldn't even bother buying SD cards nowadays (I have quite a few 2GB ones, including mini-SD and micro-SD), they come free with every little device nowadays. If you don't have one already, likely one of your friends will have extras.
