You didn't do it right. I know for a FACT that you can have up to even 4 people playing games like Gears of War, Halo 3, CoD4, etc. on 1 Xbox and they only need 1 gold account. I know this to be true because a) I've seen others do it while playing on Live and b) I did it myself with my ex last year... plus it was playing Gears of War online with my cousin that helped convince me to GET an Xbox.
