In the same 1987 graphics.

I think Capcom has figured out a way to maximize their Megaman profits by giving the least effort possible.

About as bad as DDR in the profit-to-effort ratio.

I have to be honest, I'm looking forward to it. It should be a lot of fun to play a classic MM game again.

Not even close. The Mega Man games don't sell nearly as well as DDR.

Say what you want, the originals are still my fave games in the whole MM library. If this is even half as good as they were, I have a good chance of enjoying the game.

MM9 is a kick-ass MM game, one of the top 2 or 3 of the original series. If you like the game, this is an awesome buy (if you didn't get the GBA one, that is :-)

The original stuff is way outdated even from a gameplay point of view. The dash slide and the double jump really changes the way the Megaman games are played.

Sorry, I was mistaken. I can't read Kotaku at work (it's considered "personal pages" by the stupid Idiotfilter here) and didn't realize this wasn't Megaman and Bass.
I'll definitely download this

Apparently confirmed for the X-box 360 and PS3 as well.
Also a promo trailer.

They deny it then re-confirm a couple days later? Odd.....
I'm gonna wait to see if there's a difference between the versions to make sure I get the one with the features I want. I just found out that the PS3 version of Bionic Commando Rearmed allows for remote play on the PSP (not sure if that means you can d'load it to the PSP or not....). That may make it more attractive on the PS3 for me if I can all of a sudden have it on the go. And there's some "extra" exclusive stuff for the PS3 one too (likely what's causing the delay in release). If the 360 version don't have that stuff, then the PS3 version would be the one to get.
I hope they don't do the same with MM9. I'd like to get the Wii one if possible, gotta use my Wii Points for SOMETHING :-)

OK, 1 gripe: I know it's retro and all, but would it have killed them to go for MM7-type graphics? They were nice. There's no reason to go back to MM1 to MM6 graphics
http://wii.ign.com/articles/888/888041p1.html
I'm still getting it, of course....and it should be in the $5-6 range. If they're gonna give me a NES game, it should be NES priced

It's been priced at $10
And why go for a higher level of graphics when you have suc- err I mean consumers lined up to buy it with the least amount of effort possible.

$10? Damn, that's a lot, particularly when you consider most Wiiware game, with GC-level technology, are that price.
But you know both of us are suckers and are going to get it....

I don't think technology is really going to be a determining factor here for Mega Man fans. I am willing to bet they'd still pick this game for 10 dollars over something like Beyond Good and Evil for 5 dollars.
Of course, there is no chance I'll buy the Mega Man game though. I would probably consider it if it had more appealing graphics, I don't even care if they're SNES level, just as long as they look nicer than that.

In the interview with Inafune he said he got his guys to do the sprites and then have to go back and dumb them down because people aren't used to doing sprites this simple anymore. So it sounds to me it has poor graphics on purpose... go figure.

Actually, now that I have taken a look at the game, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I am not really a fan of the series though.

What else can you call NES-quality graphics poor in today's engine? It sounds like his artists started with something at least in the SNES era when asked to do the sprites.

Maybe, but they could be "good" NES graphics. So you could have good "poor" graphics, like, say, Mega Man 2
A choice to go COMPLETELY retro like this game really doesn't make the graphics "poor" either

Look, this is an opportunity to take something retro and make it look REALLY good, and Capcom is wasting it. Just because something is 2D doesn't mean you can't make it look really cool.
Just look at C:SoTN. Sure, the sprites are 2D, but they are colorful and well designed. The parallax scrolling really fleshes out the backgrounds. They even throw some 3D backgrounds (like the clock tower). The soundtrack is also awesome. Is it retro? Yeah, because the gameplay is still similar to the NES games, and it's still 2D.
It's like taking the gameplay to the same old skool level, but using all of that console power to elevate the rest. I think dumbing down the sprites is a horrible idea.

* Concrete Man
* Hornet Man

Splash Woman was apparently designed by Inafune himself, if that means anything to anyone.

You were all thinking it, I just said it.
Though, sadly enough, my first thought was "Splash Woman" is a robotic chick who draws splash pages for comic books. I've been writing WAY too much lately.

Seems likes guys at Capcom believe that something that worked 20 years ago has got to work now, too.

I'm genuinely hoping this game fails horribly. It's one thing to have your retro game remakes, another to resell classic games via wii ware, it's another to make a new game, use graphics/gameplay from over a decade ago, and call it fresh/new/exciting.

Agreed.
Anybody who doesn't should go back and play Super Mario Brothers 1 again. Seriously! Get a emulator or your old NES, fire up the game, and play for 30 minutes. I'll wait.

Most of the filler Megaman games are just an effort at pretending to be innovative while you send Capcom money. MM9 sounds like they even got rid of the pretend part. They might as well just ask people to send $10 to Capcom, do it for old school!

I d'loaded Super Mario Bros 2 Jap version for the VC. I love it, it's part of my rotation.
Just because it looks old don't mean it ain't fun, ain't gonna be worth the $10. If I get 5 hours of play out of it, it's worth the $10. I'd pay $20 to have it on a disc/DS cart, but for $10 for a brand new game? Yeah, that's coo. Bionic Commando Re-Armed I'm getting for the same reason.

Super Mario 2J existed about 20 years ago. Just because we didn't see it here, doesn't mean it's something new. Whether you liked SM2J or not, it represented probably the best they could do at that time, whatever that happens to be. It's not like saying what if we suddenly forget everything we've learned in the 20 years and pretend we went back in time 20 years, what can we do? Throughout the interview you see the Capcom keep on saying how it was great they get to reinvent the wheel, and an inferior wheel to boot. Today we have tools to assist generating sprites, but to do it old school style means they have to do it by hand instead. Today we have more sophiscated music, but to do it old school means their composer has to relearn how to use some totally obselete tools.
The Capcom guy said about how it's all back to good old gameplay that's shooting, jumping, and moving. Go download a movie of someone beating Yellow Devil in MM1 flawlessly, and that is perfection in moving, jumping, and shooting already. You can't get better than this if you purposely restrict yourself to such a limited moveset. Stuff like the slide, dash, wall jump, double jump, and air dash gives you more complicated moveset for more varied gameplay. You can argue some of these are overkill. Certainly we don't need a boss like Kaiser Sigma in X3 where you need to do 2 vertical air dashes just to dodge his basic pattern. But this doesn't mean go back to the Stone Age of gameplay either. Even just the slide alone adds a lot of dimension to the MM gameplay.

What I was saying is that I'm enjoying this "new" (to me) game even though it's 20 years old. THat should be the same with Mega Man 9 for me and will be worth the $10
PostPosted:Tue Jul 15, 2008 10:33 pm

If you want perfection of moving, shooting, and jumping, MM1's already got it. Check out what the guy does on Elecman or Yellow Devil:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8snRuN3VBRo
I assume it's emualtor assisted, but that's about as perfectly as you can play a game with only these 3 commands.

So the existence of a perfect run of MM1 means that a sequel in the same style is unnecessary? I don't follow that logic.

It means that's all you can ever do with the genre. The end.
Mario didn't stop with just the run, jump, and throw fireballs, and actually that's already a more comprehensive moveset than most of the early Megaman games.

"Logic" isn't a part of the equation here
I just found out that they're not allowing charging or sliding in this game. I find that to be a bit of a step back, they added more to the gameplay, particularly charging.
