Speculation is that Microsoft (the publisher referred to on Bungie's page) didn't want the announcement of a new Bungie game stealing any heat from Gears 2.

This is a marketing fuck-up of the worst kind. Did Bungie just neglect to tell Microsoft they were planning on launching a new game? Or did Microsoft only realise a few hours before its announcement that, Shit, this might steal the thunder from one of our other games! Someone is getting reamed over this, I can assure you.

That is awesome, can you go into more details.

He could, but the goats.ex domain is down.

Also, isn't the point of E3 to bombard people with announcements of games? After all, how is Gears 2 going to steal the thunder of Bungie's game, when there are already announcements of FFXIII on 360, and MS's announcement of the 360 update?

People come there to be stoked for MULTIPLE GAMES! If you just showcase a single announcement, the whole effort is a failure.

Wait for the Leipzig Games Convention next month; it's by far the biggest show outside of Japan now.

If I've never heard of it, it's probably not that big.

Not that big? 503 companies, 15,600 Industry professionals and journalists, with 185,000 total attendance last year. That's compared to a total of about 5000 people at this year's E3.

I am actually VERY surprised that you call yourself a hardcore gamer and have never even heard of GC before.

It's huge

This likely happened 'cause of Epic throwing a bit of a tantrum too. And considering Fable 2 and Gears 2 are the only real exclusives they have for the rest of the year that anyone cares about, and that Gears 2 is the only mainstream one, they probably said "fine, we won't talk about a project at this E3 that's coming out next year"

Seriously, if they are so big, why does E3 get all of the media coverage?

Because it's in America and it's also a big, spectacular fucking party. There's lots of booth babes and flashing lights and colorful...fucking, colors. That's the only reason--it was the party, and it was also in the U.S., so of course it gets covered.

One word: Americans

And if you read the online sites, they cover the TGS and Lepzig quite a bit
