Goes back to our "hardcore" vs "casual / non-gamer" argument. This company has developed 5 categories:
Marginals - limited interest
Dabblers - more regular gaming
Loyalist - play a lot but stick to franchises
Magpies - play a lot over a lot of different things
Hardcores - play a ton of everything
I'd probably be a magpie that was a hardcore

I find that people who use the term "hardcore gamer" for themselves are very often gamers who need to pat themselves on the back for supporting their losing system. Sine, and a whole lot of Gamefaqs and IGN posters for example. Kali would too if he didn't associate the word "hardcore" with porn.
There are others, of course, who actually try to work out a proper definition... That doesn't describe most people who use the term "hardcore gamer" though.

Gamers used to be categorized in a much more diverse manner. If you liked RPGs, you were an RPG gamer, same deal with puzzles, action, adventure, sports, etc... I am personally not really a fan of the casual or hardcore definitions; I think they're meaningless given the complexity of the videogame market (which is more complex now, rather than much less).
A lot of the most avid gamers play the hell out of MS Solitare (which is a casual game along the lines of Brain Age). Wii Fit I would categorize as a fitness game, a game like Wii Sports is sort of a cross between fitness and casual (more casual though). Solitare and Brain Age are of the casual game genre; not necessarilly limited to casual gamers since a lot of very avid gamers play these ones too.
A lot of people who play very little in terms of videogames play GTA or Final Fantasy titles only; would you consider these casual games?
