More proof of Wii being a casual-only system

I don't even know how the argument of whether or not to allow ultra-violence in the UK media has any relation to casual gaming. I mean, this isn't anything new, the UK has banned stuff in that category for decades.

You obviously missed the sarcasm pointed at certain Wii-hating members of this forum who constantly call it a "casual only" machine

I don't understand what relevance "casual gaming" has in terms of that news though, sarcastic or not. While the object of discussion is a game, the topic is violent media. The fact that it is a Wii game isn't relevant since it would be banned on any system, or if it was a movie rather than a game. This has to do with media standards in the UK.

Thats half the problem, which i mentioned a while ago. The Wii WANTS you to do full motion (like a full motion bowling approach) yet there are ways to be better by cheating (i.e. using just your wrist and fingers). Make up your mind Wii, be a gimmick and do it right or stop attempting!

Anyway, is this really news? The UK tries to ban just about everything if it has even a drop of blood in it. Sure, they have softcore porn on network TV there, but god forbid Cartoon violence. This isn't really worth a debate.

I don't see how violence has anything to do with casual/hardcore (hey fucker, use core/non-core please). It does help dismiss the kiddy image though...about as much as Manhunt did (not much).

I doubt Nintendo would want to lose that image though, especially with their new "wide appeal" approach. Though I imagine if they really wanted to lose it, it would take them actually releasing 1st party mature games...not simply allowing 3rd party offerings (I don't think Nintendo actively blocks 3rd party mature games...I think it's just devs that believe it's a limited market on Nintendo systems and avoid releasing there...correct me if I'm wrong).

PS - I slept with my roomates girlfriend...hell, I screwed her in the same (hotel) bed while he was passed out drunk after a Depeche Mode concert. NEVER trust a fucking roomate.

The Wii has a definative "non-core" (family-friendly/casual) image, evidenced by the fact that a single vague "core" (violent/hardcore) game is causing outrage in a segment of the market.

His supposed sarcasm is pretty stupid in light of your explaination because according to the article, the Wii HAS a casual reputation and zeus is trying to claim a single unknown "violent" game all of a sudden reverses that image....

For the record, Mental wasn't that bad at all; I am fairly sure myself, Kali, and others here were worse to him than he was to others. All he did was make harmless threats of death and legal action.

Proportional fucking RESPONSE though--you guys are arguing about VIDEO GAMES and you take a cheap shot at his failed MARRIAGE? Isn't that a little off? A research idea: figure out a way to determine what percentage of a post is addressing the topic at hand by introducing new ideas and supporting old ones, and what percentage of a post is occupied with insulting the other person and their position. The amount of crap in the post is the crap ration: 1 means completely useful, 0 means completely crap. This number is kept for each poster in each thread. Each post to a thread changes your crap ratio for that thread depending on what you post. Once your ratio for a thread drops below a threshold, you're locked from that thread only. (Which I don't think phpbb supports, but that's trivial to do compared to getting the crap ratio.)

Getting the crap ratio: really, really hard. Natural language processing is something I know nothing about. But, considering how good spam filters are, I think we could get away with not actually understanding the text and using Bayesian filters. Training the filter would be the tough part, I think.

Anyway, this is a roundabout way of saying I look at these threads, consider locking it, then decide it's that's more trouble than it's worth, and at least it keeps the crap contained in a single thread.

Also: I've had a bigass cup of coffee and this is how I'm putting off editing our conference paper due Monday.
