Again, more talk of it being "incredibly hard" and with "unforgiving level design" like with Bionic Commando. Yeah, it was a bit tough back in the day when it was completely brand new and there were only a handful of platformers, but nowadays, it's easy

Yeah, I did manage to finish it in one sitting on the collection for Gamecube. It isn't nearly as hard as the Castlevania titles are (which I still find very difficult).

Castlevania 3 was a bit tough in some spots, but the first was never really that hard. The second was just very secretive about any of its hints but not that hard overall

Never really that hard? I don't think I ever made it made it past the Grim Reaper. (Or maybe I didn't even make it
to the Grim Reaper.) I CV3 first, though, so I was spoiled by continues.

Did you play it again? I don't think you can just beat Yellow Devil with pure reflexes unless you're incredibly fast. Of course you're supposed to just memorize the patern, but it's easier said than done, and obviously you have to know it's weak against the lightning attack or you'd be fighting him for a very long time.
So far as levels go, I think only Iceman's stage is tough if you try to do it without the Magnet Beam.

Yellow Devil? You mean that thing that goes across the screen in blocks and forms an eye that you're supposed to hit with the Elec Beam? I've beaten that one MANY times without getting hit in both MM1 and MM2. It's really quite easy, you only have to dodge the bottom two "layers".
Iceman's stage was probably the toughest of the original games' stages.
My bud and I used to play the games yearly in a Mega-thon back in our uni days (to go along with our Ninja Gaiden-thon; we once did all three of those in 4 1/2 hours, took us 7 1/2 hours a few months back). Did that for about 5 years. Then I played it again a couple years back when the Anniversary collection came out. I think I beat MM1 and MM2 in 3 hours combined (one summer in high school, I used to play MM2 almost every day and would beat it in under an hour). The only ones that gave me trouble were some parts in MM3 (I think that's easily the hardest one) and, for some reason, Wily in MM5.

The only level that really gave us trouble in CV3 was #12 I think, the one with the fucking falling blocks. Holy shit was that irritating. My one bud is a CV freak, he was really good at it and could do it no prob. But I don't remember too much difficulty other than that level and some sporadic parts here and there
It's been a good 10+ years since I played it, so I'm not sure what it's like anymore. But I don't ever recall it being hard like, say, Tyson was in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Ninja Gaiden 1 or 3, or Ghosts 'N Goblins.
Speaking of G 'N G, I played the arcade one in the plug-and-play Capcom game and got to the very fucking end, but I could not beat the two fucking devils with the stupid shield; I can't imagine how many people wasted countless quarters on that fucker. There are actually levels designed so you HAVE to get hit to get past certain parts. It's actually unfairly difficult

There is no Yellow Devil in MM2.

Then MM3 or whatever other MM he appeared in (coulda sworn it was 2, but it's been a while). I remember he came back a few times (we actually called him the Dematerializer growing up), including a green one in Rockman and Bass

Yeah he was in 3 but it's way easier because you have energy tanks to work with and he has easier patterns.

Other than the first couple of times I fought him in 1, he was always easy.
