Anybody getting WAR?

I thought about getting Wrath of the Lich King, but decided I'll get WAR instead when it comes out on the 18th or something, and no I don't actually know anything about this game. Open beta starts on the 7th, though.

Friend of mine is in the beta. Its fairly unfinished, missing some lighting elements, textures, etc. The classes are cool, but its all about PvP and taking over keeps.

Frankly I wasn't very impressed.

I was under the impression that there was nothing in WAR besides PvP to begin with. It's solely focused on PvP and the PvE part is just like a sideshow.

I want it!

But again, no PC. Kill me.

Bah, don't worry about it. Your country would just ban the game anyway. If it's not Y7, it's not for you.

Apparently I got the last 2 pre order copies in the nearest 30 mile radius. I didn't know it was this big!

It's been pegged as the WoW killer, all the disgruntled WoW players are praying it'll kill WoW. :P So it's going to be pretty big. Better then the "salvation" Age of Conan was supposed to be.

Well AoC looks like a pretty generic WoW clone and it's tough to beat WoW at being WoW.

WAR seems to be totally PvP with no effort at pretending there's a PvE game which I think is why they might succeed. History shows that there's really no such thing as a MMORPG that's good at both PvE and PvP at the same time. Until now the model seems to be try to do the best in PvE and whatever effort you've left going into PvP.

For what it's worth, AoC had 700K subscribers (at one point anyway) and just broke 1 million box sales recently.

I still play Dark Age of Camelot (Mythic's first MMO) and have access to their internal boards.

Don't know if I will play WAR, however. Not because I don't like the game (was in the closed beta and was suspended due to inactivity), but because I just don't think I have the time anymore.

Game has advanced a lot since the first closed beta, that's for sure. And yes, this game will be huge. At least at first. Mythic really dropped the ball with the second expansion to DAOC (basically putting epic, long, tedious, required PvE in a game that is centered around PvP). Hopefully they learned from that horrid mistake. They have somewhat rectified the situation in DAOC (you can PvP to get the skills and items granted in the second expansion now), but they did it about 3 years too late.

I was shocked when i found that Mythic was based out of Fairfax, VA and right around the corner from my old house... i sent them a resume for an accounting/executive position even though they werent hiring, just in case, lol.

Every MMO after WoW is pegged as the WoW killer. Besides, LOTRO is successfully killing WoW as it is.

I wish I could understand the process your brain goes through to form your opinions.

Whatever. It's a slow and painful death. After all, for every MMO that comes out after WoW, people leave the game, never to return. And it's not like it's getting any more players. A lot of people from LOTRO left WoW, because they were fed up with it.

ANd I think for every 1 person that leaves WOW, 5 start playing it for the first time.

Sine... as much as I enjoy LOTRO too and believe it to be a far superior game, I'm not NEARLY disillusioned enough to think they're hurting let alone killing WoW. Their fan base is pretty damn solid and it's not going anywhere.

Actually if you assume that the Asian playing population (6 million+) will just go to the game with the biggest Western playing base (for gold selling), that means to beat WoW you only have to get about ~2 million people since the Western section of WoW is only around 4 million.

If games like AoC did not threaten WoW, they wouldn't be posting on their main page about how 40% of the guys who left for AoC eventually returned to WoW. Now a game isn't going to *die* if only has 1 million players, but it is entirely possible WoW loses 90% of its population in a relatively short time if WotLK turns out to suck, or some of the competitor turns out to be extremely good. AoC pulled 700K subscription, and as far as I can tell there's absolutely nothing special about the game.
