Just a note that may give an idea as to what the announcement may be: Sony just announced a new pricepoint of 99USD for the PS2 beginning April 5th. This makes it fairly possible that the PS3 announcement may also be a major price drop.

I am hoping for a smaller PS3 model; the slimline PS2 and the PS1 systems are both very nice in comparison to the PSX and original PS2.

The LAST thing they need to do is to pull more components out of it to make it smaller... losing backwards compatibility was bad enough. Cheaper would be cool though.

Ummm...this should have happened two years ago. Why isn't it 50 bucks already?

Have you seen the size of the PS3? It makes the original Xbox look tiny. They very badly need to make the thing smaller.

But I want my backwards compatibility so I likely won't "upgrade"

Simple: it still sells decently. They've only started to consistently drop below 200k units sold per month. Why would they drop the price? Nintendo could drop the price of the Wii to $149 tomorrow and demolish the PS3 and 360 in the short term. But they have a hard time making all the units in demand right now so there's no reason to drop. Same with the PS2. Sony's only now been given a reason to drop the price
