I assume then this is an illegal "leak" of the beta?

Umm, it got a C&D letter, why would I want a demo of something awesome if I know I'll never get the full thing. -_-

Yeah, if they were so close to releasing it, why not just finish it and leak it out elsewhere?

Square has some of the most draconian attitudes in the industry towards their inevitable fan communities. They C&D everything, they harassed Andrew Vestal over SquareNet too, but the fans love the games so much they'll never stop..

When they say 98% done, it generally means that it's just about finalizing some beta testing and working out some bugs. It's likely completely done content-wise

Because if a complete release comes out, they get sued. Someone else will have to finish it, not the original team

Dude, he was running the site on a rogue server in the basement of their office. They were worried about security and the massive amount of bandwidth (in 1990s gigabytes) being used.

But, this thing with the game isn't really hurting anybody.

I said elsewhere. Obviously, it DID leak out, because there is a download for it. They could just finish it internally and go "oops, it's on some rogue site" without putting their name on it.

Uhh, I have the ROM of the 98% done version. If all I have to live with are some minor tweaks and bugs, I'll live.
