  • id was sold to Bethesda's parent company

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

This got buried with the celebrity deaths but it's the end of an era in gaming. The buyout of one of the last, big, independent developers and a true pioneer in gaming history

Is Valve the only independent developer of any size left?

It may sound like I'm mourning the death of id and in a way, I am. These guys epitomized the independent developer for many years and it's sad to see them gobbled up. Sure, it's just a sign of the maturing of the industry and id will likely still be relatively independent and never lose their identity even if they've only been a shadow of their former selves for a decade. But it just won't be the same.

Damn, that sucks. Clover goes to Sega. Looking Glass goes to 2K Games. All of these awesome developers get sucked up into other companies. I guess id wasn't doing much after Doom 3, but Bethesda is a big group of shitty programmers that make good games. Sure, Fallout 3 is good, but it's buggy as hell.
