  • Yang, Edge, and Palom stories now available for FF4

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

Rydia's story clocked in at 3.5 hours for me; so shorter than the first one, but for 3 bucks it's about half the price of lunch; so a great value.

Minor spoilers below for Rydia and Palom's stories:

Rydia's story took place across the underworld; which was really cool, it was one of my favourite areas to explore in the original game. The Underworld seems to have prospered somewhat since it became accessible from overworld. I had a lot of fun exploring the area and revisiting old locations with new quests, as well as visiting new ones. Luca is no longe a little girl, but a full grown woman who seems to have an attachment to Cid. Like Cid, she is a master of the Hammer, although she is much quicker and doesn't miss like Cid did in the first chapter. While it is Rydia's story; she plays almost as large of a role.

Yang's story starts at Fabul fighting off an unexpected invasion from a neighbouring country who he considered a closes allie.

Palom's takes place in the Kingdom of Troia. He is there training mages in the dark magic arts. The question asked is why does a peaceful kingdom like Troia require powerful black magic. Palom, an adult now, is well on his way in following Master Tellah's footsteps to becoming a Sage. Oh, and Palom is the womanizer character of this new series.

I am about to start Yang's story. My descriptions above are based on the summary and references in previous chapters.

Oh, and Kain fans MUST get the first chapter; he plays a role in it. I think people will be surprised at how well these new stories are done. I hope this one exceeds Nega Man 9's success; and that we start seeing more of these retro-style games on download platforms.

Seems cool, wish it wasn't only on the Wii.

Could be the emulation is much easier on the Wii and they figure that the sales aren't going to be large enough to justify more than just a quick translation

Yang's story clocked in at 2.5 hours, which makes it the shortest, but Palom's story has already clocked 2.5 hours for me. So this makes the playtime longer than my last SNES playthrough of the game.

Yang's story had his daughter Ursula; without revealing much, they seem to be sort of an Edgar/Sabin type duo. This chapter is very straight forward compared to Rydia's.

Palom's has lots of dialogue in it; it is my favourite chapter yet; Palom and Leonora are my favourite characters. These two remind me of Chrono Trigger/Skies type characters. Troia is also a very nice environment.

Right now I am enjoying the game more than I did FF4. The gameplay is smoother, the character cast is a step up (old characters are more fun, new characters are all great), and the plotline scenarios are more interesting. Highly enjoyable so far! =)

Finished Palom's story at 3:30.

I tried out Palom's challenge quest for a bit. It's fairly difficult, I died a few times but have managed to find strategies involving spells like Hold and Sleep, which I never used in the past, to get through. Palom's main quest was my favourite so far. I will try out Edge's tomorrow.
