WoW player makes in game threats of hijacking an airplane and killing as many people as possible to prove that just doing so won't get you arrested.... he was wrong.

There is a difference between being arrested and being thrown in prison. No, he won't go to prison. Yes, he will be arrested and his computer taken.

if they really want to yes, he could go to jail. Making terrorist threats carries a pretty huge penalty. I'm not saying they will, but if they wanted to press charges they could and he would lose.

Yes. Mostly they don't do that, they take you to jail and scare the shit out of you and rough you up a bit for being a dumbass, then they let you go with the implication that if you screw up and go over the edge they'll throw you in hell. Might not be the worst of all things, really.
