TheRe are mixed opinions on the new look.

and yet still no backwards compatability. Why would I fucking want to spend $300 on a system that won't play 90% of the games I'd want to play on it?

Well, if you have a PS2, you're set. The two systems use different ports, so I am not sure if there would be too much of a conflict in having both.

I would agree if my TV didnt already have the PS2 and DVD player hogging up all my available RGBYW inputs... I guess i have one HDMI available that would be good for a PS3 if it connects that way, but i would def need to daisy chain another surge protector which im not sure is a safe idea. Too many electronics!

You shouldn't have all 3 hooked in... switch between the PS2/3 on power. I doubt you still play PS2 games on a regular basis....right?
It's smaller and lighter, has a 120GB HDD, and packs "all the same features" of the regular PS3 while consuming 34 percent less power and taking up 32 percent less space.
Engadget

Very cool... too bad I still have no use for one.

I dont see how a slim system matters all that much. Obviously a slim DS or PSP is awesome, but who cares how large the console is? The price drop is the only draw here.

I actually still play PSX games on a regular basis =P

PS2 games less so, I am not so fond of the games of the of past generation as I am of the 32/64 bit generation. This generation I am finding to be good though; next year looks awesome.

Have you physically seen a PS3? They're huge, and they're heavy. They're not big or heavy enough to not fit into shelf space, but I imagine it's awkward. And the curved top means you can't stack anything on top of it. I assume the redesign also cuts down on heat - PS3s run hot.

Anyway, the price drop is probably mostly a result of the redesign, so you can't blame Sony for also advertising the new design.

Well, it doesn't have as much to do with it being "slim", but the new design is already better than the original because it's FLAT ON TOP. I can't tell you how many times I sit a controller on the PS3 and it immediately slides off onto the floor. For some reason that really annoys me because there's no reason for it to be freaking curvy when it serves no purpose.

STRONG rumour that's coming in a firmware update. That would be very smart of them

"Koller said that Sony is not considering adding backwards compatibility support to the PS3, a feature stripped from the line a while ago but sometimes requested by some fans. "Backwards compatibility is off the table," he said."

Last paragraph in this article on kotaku.

Yes, we all know how well Sony does in telling the truth (especially when considering that at the PS3 launch, they touted their backwards compatibility as a staple of the system and stated that the 360's crap software backwards compatibility was crap), but until the PS2 stops selling, don't expect it anytime soon.

Geesh. Everybody needs to get a A/V Receiver.

Seriously. What games am I supposed to buy with a PS3? I mean last generation, I bought all three consoles because each one had some good exclusives to offer (even if PS2 was king). But, with PS3, I don't see a need to buy a PS3 just to watch MGS4.

Hey now, there's also LBP which you'll get bored with after a weekend, and Lair which showed us how ground breaking and awesome the SIX-AXIS is, right? There's also Resistance, Uncharted, and... Resistance 2

Valkyria Chronicles looks amazing.

Before you exclaim, "I'm not going to buy a system for one game!" I'm not saying you should. You asked what can you buy the PS3. That's a game I know I'd like to play.

The PS3 is little more than an MGS4 adapter right now. If you're going to buy the system, you HAVE to get the only potential system seller on the system (and one of the best games of this generation). Other games that you may want to consider are:

Valkyria - supposed to be an excellent RPG
Disgaea 3 - if you like the series, it's supposed to be a great one
Time Crisis 4 - if you like the series, it's awesome
Killzone 2 - probably the only FPS worth it on the system

Rent Uncharted. It's a 10 hour game that you'll NEVER need to play again but is a fun experience once. It's too damned expensive to buy outright

I don't think there is a bad game in the Disgaea universe; they're much more light hearted than other RPGs, but have very cool features not found in other games, along with some of the most entertaining sequences out there. Speaking of which, Phantom Brave is also out this week for Wii.

Valkyria Chronicles is from the team that brought Skies of Arcadia, and I hear there is a sequel in the works (I know we have heard that one before).

There is also Final Fantasy versus 13 and Final Fantasy 13 next year.

Then there is also the PSN network which has access to some really good games.

There is also not a 54.2% chance your system will break.

Little Big Planet! That game is awesome. Very simple platformer, but it's got a lot of variety and the user-created content is really, really good. Plus they're about to add water to the game as an update. :)

It's always the people who don't own a system that will tell you there are NO GAMES for it. Christ, you two are retards.

MGS4
LBP
Infamous
Uncharted
Valkyria
Flower
Pixeljunk Monsters/Eden
Fat Princess

This does not include multiplatform titles or shared games between XBL/PSN.

So add to that...

Fallout
Call of Duty series
GTA4
Bioshock
Dead Space
Street Fighter
Burnout
Red Faction
Megaman 9
MvC2

etc.

You've also got the PSOne downloads which you can play on the PS3 or PSP. Admittedly, I'd only purchase a few of the 30-something titles they have up since the list is stacked with shitty first-party Sony titles.

I just saw FF7 on it the other day and almost bought it for the PSP, but considering my GF never stops playing lumines or luxor, i cant even use the thing anymore to begin with.

Uhh, Zeus? Were you addressing me, or just people in general? Because I mentioned Valkyria Chronicles because it's the game I'd like to play more than any other this generation. But that doesn't really matter, because I'm not going to consider buying something like that until after I graduate.

I have some sort of aversion to the PS3 controller, so the games I own for it (with the exception of mercenaries 2 that I found at an incredible price) are entirely exclusives. I think that it is entirely worth the price of entirely based on its exclusives alone now.

Some of the exclusive DL games like PixelJunk Monsters and Everyday Shooter are must haves, too.

Yes! Wipeout HD (and Fury), Fat Princess, Pixeljunk Eden, Flower, Noby Noby Boy, and a couple more are really excellent exclusives. This lower price point just finally justifies it all.

I have never played a PS3 game with anyone I know, so I can't attest to the PSN itself, but there are great multiplayer games on this system that are exclusives.

And online is free.

$300 may get me to pull the trigger.

In general. I was agreeing with yours and mentioning the few other exclusives I thought were worth it (unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be too many yet). I did forget Little Big PLanet, though. That's another good one. There are a few DLCs that some have mentioned as well (and Noby Noby Boy, which seems forgotten).
