Not quite Resident Evil 4

Early concept version, before they completely switched gears, apparently.

It looks so fucking sweet, much more Silent Hill than the sort of Dead Rising/L4D-ish thing I guess it turned out to be. I would have actually bought this, it looks genuinely scary.

Saw it on PA, too. It does look interesting, but it also looks like RE2, just better. (That being the only other RE I've played.)

RE4, on the other hand, was a new experience for me - a good one, too.

Meh, I would have enjoyed playing through that first conception of RE4.

RE4 itself was a blast, but obviously the game dropped survival horror for action/adventure at that point.

I might have fun playing through that version of RE4 as well. That's not the question. The real question is would you rather play that version of RE4 than the one you played? For me the answer is "probably not."

If you have access to a Wii, get the Gamecube release of the Resident Evil remake. It's freakin' awesome.

That would only work if the Wii played Gamecube games....

I think the whole series has. Silent Hill probably owns the serious survival horror cred now (maybe other series too, I don't know).

Seriously, you didn't know the Wii is backwards compatible?

I still have access to a GameCube back home. But I also have my DS now, and every 360 game Shrin has mentioned will be around. So that brings me back to my original point: that style of game is good and I'd like it, but I'd rather play something else.

For an 8 hour game, set aside the time for the Gamecube RE release. It's freakin' awesome

Uhhh... no? I'd rather play/watch/read other things.

This love letter to RE4 makes, among many others, the same point I did: http://www.gamespite.net/toastywiki/ind ... identEvil4

I agree with everything he said save for the SM64 diss at the end. That was one of the big landmark titles in gaming history

Yeah, but it's almost fucking unplayable now. I tried it out on the VC awhile back, and holy SHIT does that camera SUCK. Also, it's kinda like Mario is always running on ice, which bodes poorly to platforming. Mix up dull, obscure objectives, few hints and large, empty worlds, and you've got a hella frustrating game if you don't have the benefit of remembering where half the shit is.

Heh, my opinion was ahead of its time. I always thought the game, as well as most of N64's other 3D offerings (which was all of them), sucked.

The Playstation's offerings just played their cards right with how 3D was approached. It wasn't a forced measure to "innovate". Developers slowly adapted and entered the 3D worlds with forethought. Some developers are still very wary of 3D today. (Konami and Castlevania, for one.)

Nintendo has this problem of innovation for innovation's sake, which isn't always the best option.

Konami was not "wary" of 3D, and in fact tried it over and over again with the Castlevania series, and now 10 years later, may finally get it right. When he posts the love letter to Symphony, I'll post that. It's interesting because he talks about how the game is so damned good because Konami didn't care what the developers did; Konami didn't see that as the future of the series, so they let the developers do as they pleased.
