Sony winning is best, and Sony takes bigger risks - SCEA

"In an industry that's certainly had its challenges this year, we like to say that the environment where PlayStation wins is best for this industry. We have a brand that can play on a worldwide basis, young and old, male and female, where our competition tends to be relegated to either select regions or to select consumer audiences. ...We don't have unlimited money, we cater to a more mass market audience. I think we're willing to take a little bit more risk than a competitor like Nintendo is and ultimately we deliver to the masses on a worldwide basis and that's what we've done for the last 15 years." - SCEA boss Jack Tretton

Article

--------------

My take on risk:
-Sony followed the usual trend of upgrading their processors to a higher level.
-Sony's processor upgrade followed Microsoft's which is in line with.
-Sony used a new medium, which also happened to be their latest video medium for their movie distribution branch.
-Sony's controller is very similar to the controller they've used for the past 15 years.
-Sony had brand name recognition after selling the most consoles by far for two back to back generations prior to the PS3 release.
-Sony's next major addition is a motion control device shaped like a remote; similar to a device which has been highly successful in the market over the past three years.

On being the most widely appealing system and not having unlimited money:
-PS3 holds 20% of the hardware market and has the lowest software sales and lowest attach rate. Despite their self proclaimation of having the highest mass appeal.
-Sony doesn't have the cash of their competitors because of bad business throughout their corporation.

And now with this news http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009 ... nsoles.ars it makes them look even better!

At least when your Xbox RROD's Microsoft fixes it for free instead of charging $150... douchey move Sony.

But people will want to pay the $150.

I think it is just Tretton who is a bit of an ego-clown in their company, but he speaks for their company so...

Because after 3 years of getting their asses handed to them they're still stupid and arrogant. Sounds like history repeating itself

Oh c'mon, what do you expect them to say? 'We are losing in every possible sales category that exists'? Is that how you would run your company? Like Kup said, this is typical spin that is expected to be said or the PS3 would nose dive into the earth even further.

That said, i still have faith for a PS3 comback.

Flip's point is mine. Corporations are expected to say these things publicly.

While I would agree with you if Sony actually looked like they knew what they were doing. Throughout this generation they haven't looked like they know what's going on. This is a case of that over three years after they started with their whole "It's playstation, everyone will still want it for 600 bucks" thing.

A corporate spin would be; while Xbox 360 is last in Japan in terms of sales, we have expanded the brand by largely surpassing the total sales of the original Xbox, or even Sony's own "It's actually good that we haven't sold as much as expected; right now we are losing a lot of money on each box," paraphrased from a couple years back. Not "We are the ones who take the risk and appeal to the largest audience," because this is all but factually incorrect.

There is a large distance between a corporate spin and apparent ignorance worthy of ridicule. Sony's Tretton is on the latter side.

Guys, what I'm saying is you don't stand up there and act cocky. It permeates your culture since it's coming from the top down. It makes people in the company think that they're doing everything A-OK when they're not. Quotes like "we're right on projection with the PS3, we're good" don't help either. It also pisses off your customers who are trying to stay loyal to you but look around and have nothing to be loyal about as they're basically got shat on for 2+ years. The design of the PS3 controller and the system itself (technically awesome but notoriously difficult to program for, a huge problem nowadays) are a function of that arrogance.

Do you know how hard it is for me to convince a lot of gamers - people I know or people who just walk into an EB - to buy a PS3? Try to find a response to "but the 360 is cheaper and has better games" other than "yeah, but the PS3 has MGS4, Little Big Planet, GT5 Prologue, Resistance, and Uncharted and most of the same games on the 360....and it's a Blu Ray player" that doesn't get met with "but the 360 has Halo, Gears, and many more great exclusives and I don't care about Blu Ray, especially when it's $100 more". It's a lot worse if they already own a 360.

The last company in this industry to do this and not change with the times got whupped 2 generations in a row before they had to make drastic changes to their philosophy. There's no reason to get crushed before you change, it's called "foresight". Sony has gotten way too comfy with the "we will build it and they will come" mentality and it's shown up as cockiness. As much as I despise Microsoft, their entertainment division at least isn't cocky and have stood up and said "yep, we're gonna get better, here's how". That's how I would expect spin to be done, not "we're the best and you know it".

I seem to remember another company being a little comfy with themselves and making a product they felt was wonderful and having to all but admit it was a mistake by releasing a product to replace it within 2 years......

Despite all that, I still think the PS3 wins this generation worldwide. FAAR too many Sony bitches out there that have just been waiting for the price drop and never considered a 360 or Wii. I've seen that a lot too and it's particularly evident in many parts of Europe. But forget these days of Playstation dominance with the "meh" response the PSP has been getting and the PS3's antiquated business model pricing out of the stratosphere for almost 3 years.
