This week the DS hit 121 million, in 5 years it outsold the 120 million Gameboy brand units that sold over a 15 year period.

Since the NES, Nintendo had not had a home console that surpassed it, and sales had declined every following generation until the Wii. In 3 years the Wii, at nearly 63 million units, has this week surpassed the 62 million units which the NES sold over its 10 year history.

Gimmicks or not, the Japanese videogame company's stance has managed to recapture the market they once had; and they managed it at an absolutely explosive pace. From here on out, it's all extra territory; and both systems have tens of millions of guaranteed sales yet to go.
