Tetsuya Nomura; hints at new title, looks like FF7 remake.

This could only point to a Final Fantasy 7 remake, as FF6 DS and Kingdom Hearts 3 are two logical and expected steps that won't generate a reaction as large as he is suggesting this announcement would.
Ol’ Tetsuya’s doing what he does best again: stirring things up with foreshadowed announcements of announcements. In the most recent Gamega magazine, amid speakings of his other projects, he’s asked what he’s most looking forward to in 2010. Nomura declines to answer directly, saying that he can’t yet say the name, but it’s a yet-unannounced game that many people are currently anticipating and that he’s received personal requests about. He foresees a huge reaction to its revelation. What his team is up to is anyone’s guess, and guessing is probably just what he intended with that hint drop. Well 2010 is practically here, so let the guessing begin.

I just bought FF6 for GBA last week, lol... guess I'll get the DS version too if it is indeed coming

Yeah, I'm a sucker for FF6. I'll get a DS remake even though I have it on the SNES and the GBA. :)

Maybe it'll be a new Chrono game?

FFVII looking like Advent Children, yes please.

I wouldn't snub a new Chrono game either, but the stars would have to align to get the right people on board I thought.

Nomura was just a field graphic artist on Chrono Trigger, and not involved at all with Chrono Cross, so I don't see why he would announce a Chrono game.

Chrono Trigger was the serendipitous result of Sakaguchi, Hori, Toriyama, Mitsuda and Uematsu collaborating on a project that was not Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Even if another game with "Chrono" in the title is made, it probably won't have the same charm because Chrono Trigger was very much a product of its creators.

CT was unique for sure but Cross is arguably as good. It may not have had the graphical style but it was a wonderful game. They also hinted at a game called Chrono Break back in the early days of the PS2 so it won't be out of the question for them to announce another. If it does come, it may end up on the handhelds, though, as Cross did not sell particularly well

Chrono Trigger was just a crazy amount of right decisions. If looking to hear about a Chrono Trigger sequel, the first person who will mention it will be Mitsuda, Hori, or Kitase.

Chrono Trigger will always be my favorite RPG or story for an RPG I think... I'll be honest I may have teared up once at the ending

Give Skies of Arcadia a try, it has a very similar sort of character cast and atmosphere to Chrono Trigger. Think of it as a game that takes place in a heavily expanded Kingdom of Zeal. Like Chrono Trigger, it is one of the most pleasant atmosphered and prettiest games around; it's one of the few games where I could explore everything just for the view.

Play the Legends version though, it adds some good things and halves the encounter rate (which makes exploring the outside world much more fun) and gives you items to further decrease it. The game also has two phases:

The first phase is one big adventure which is just like an age of exploration journey. In this part of the game you are introduced to most of the major political elements and figures in the world.

The second section is where the main plot begins, you have a base of operations which grows as you collect people with various skills to add to it, giving a degree of customize options to the player. It also has a sort of Zelda-like style of gameplay here where you gain items which give you more access to the world.

Granted, but too many people underestimated Chrono Cross. It's a great game with great mechanics, a great soundtrack, and a pretty good story.

And was an awesome and more than worthy sequel to one of the best games ever made. That's no small feat. Many lesser games - such as FF7, Super Mario Sunshine, and lots of smaller franchise sequels like Blaster Master 2 - have completely crumbled under the weight of their legendary predecessor. Cross was more Godfather 2 than Terminator 3.

Do I hear you praising not just a JRPG? =P

Not just any JRPG, but a very stereotypical one =P

Stereotypical? Hardly. The battle mechanics are different than any other RPG. The story is different than any other RPG.

Also, LOL at Anarchy.

You're probably right. I can't think of a JRPG that's taken place in a colourful world with dragons, stylized art direction, featuring a teenage male whose ultimate goal is to defeat an evil entity bent on world destruction, and must travel to another world to do it... Using a turn-bases battle system.

It's one of the few RPGs I know of where spells are in limited quantity, which added a new level of strategy. Also, there's not a lot of games that play with the 5th dimension in their story.

Chrono Cross probably has one of the better engines out of the JRPGs. You can either treat it like a generic one and load up 10 Healing Winds and wimp out your way the whole game, or you can actually just learn when to defend and try to set up field stuff to your advantage while using the default allocated amount (i.e. 1 Healing Wind per person max).

But then ironically CC's lack of significant sales (certainly didn't do better than CT) shows that being original and innovative doesn't really pay. But then the game probably has to take some blame for having characters you cannot possibly care about and a story that absolutely made no sense.

It made sense, but part of it were told wrong. I wish they didn't try to cram a bunch of the story into one dialog before the boss battle.

Chrono Cross was basically its own story and then in the battle before the final battle it was like 'oh yeah this is how it related to Chrono Trigger'. Really it should have been its own stand alone game since the CT characters didn't impact the game in any meaningful way.

Oh yeah, Lucca had nothing at all to do with Cross' story.....

Her role is about as important as the hero's village that got burned down by the bad guys.

The only character in Chrono Trigger that had a meaningful impact in the story of Chrono Cross was the Masamune, and even there the sword was corrupted for no reason it might as well be 'generic evil sword' instead, but at least the sword did something that was more than just background noise.
