  • RE 5 DLC

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

There are two episodes and two costume packs (the costume packs unlock new variants of Sheva and Chris is a new, but with the same levels, mercenaries mode).

I finished the second DLC pack last night, so I'll give you my review.

The first pack (I'm not sure what it's called) has Chris and Jill visiting a mansion modeled after the RE1 and RE0 mansions. It still controls like RE5, but the way that you defeat enemies, the pacing, and the level design is MUCH more akin to the older RE1/2/3/0 model. It's still coop, but you traverse through doors in a fashion similar to the RE1/2/3/0 loading screens. This is the more enjoyable (in my opinion) DLC, and it is only 400 MS points ($5), so it's easy to recommend. It all caps off with a Wesker battle that is lame, but it is a fun revisitation to RE5 and changes the way it is played enough to make it really interesting (more of a return to survival horror that you can argue RE4 and 5 have moved away from).

The second pack has John (I think that's his name. He's the fellow who drives the boat for Chris and Sheva) and Jill going from where you left Jill after the Wesker battle to a helicopter that conveniently has his and her rocket launchers inside. It plays much more like an actioned-up RE5 chapter. The big problem I had with RE5 was that it tried to ratchet up the action while having these severely antiquated controls. This pack pits you against waves and waves of enemies to block your progression, significantly much more than you would find in any of the regular chapters of RE5. It would have been much more enjoyable for me if I had been playing this in a coop environment. The AI still is AWFUL - constantly standing in front of you while you are in combat, and being unable to handle more than one enemy when they are left alone. This pack would be fun if you know someone else who grabs it, but if you are thinking about getting this to play alone, it's not as fun as the first pack... and really shows the weaknesses in the partner AI (much like Mass Effect 2 in insanity).

Also, even though this is totally contradictory, my favourite part of the game is the mercenaries mode. This is another environment where you can see the weaknesses of the severely antiquated controls. However, busting up a bunch of zombies is a very enjoyable experience, especially in coop. Each DLC pack (the two levels and the two costume packs) unlock 2 characters each for the new mercenaries mode who all have their own weapon loadouts and context-sensitive melee attacks (Barry has the Barry Sandwich. Just sayin). This is a fun way to revisit this game.

All of this stuff is going to come out in a gold edition of RE5, so if you haven't picked this game up yet I would like to say that these are all worthwhile additions to the RE5 game. If you were looking for an excuse to grab a cheap, more expansive version of RE5, I recommend it.
