Looks like Ryu can climb up walls without doing a small hop back. It'd be pretty tough to play without that.

I think it was only the first Ninja Gaiden where he couldn't climb naturally? Though I could be mistaken.

Well I only played 2 of them. If you could climb up naturally in 2 I was still hopping my way up!

Yep, that's right. In the first one you had to jump back and forth to climb a wall, in the other two Ryu would just scale the wall on his own
