Played through one of the two maps they've released so far today. Took me about an hour to get a silver metal, but I probably could have gotten gold if I tried a little longer. Might be a bit out of practice.
Honestly it was pretty easy until the last two waves. Basically I did what you do for all the other maps (lol). Built three kill zones of level three gun turrets, a temporal tower in each zone, and one level two missile tower.

The maps in the third pack are really difficult. I'm having trouble thinking of anything that can even get me past the first several waves let alone the later ones. In the first one you have two completely independent entrances and exits (with very, very little overlap) and you have to defend one core housing from the normal deal of assorted waves and the other one has CONSTANT (as in it probably never stops until the end) walkers coming out, so if you lose a single core from the housing area it gets walked out no matter what you do. They still manage to be spaced out enough for AOE to not be all that great. I've tried tons of cannon towers, I've tried tons of upgraded cannon towers, I've tried cannon towers and upgraded meteor towers... Zilch. Nothing. No success.

Okay the first one was doable... it just took gun towers. Like all the other maps haha.

Constant walkers? That demands a bunch of concussion towers. I know that from all of those Wave99 games I played.

It's not that kind of map. You don't have the resources and the range is too great for them to be useful.

I've gone back through and got gold medals on the third map packs normal and challenge modes. Once I stopped trying to be fancy and gave up and used gun towers they went by fairly easily. Definitely looking forward to the last one coming out this week. Going by the map names they certainly sound difficult. There's even a single achievement for getting a gold medal on all the versions and challenges of one of them so it should be lots of fun.

Okay, the fourth map pack came out today and I got a gold medal on the first map on the first try with only one backspace/backtrack and I basically immediately came up with an ironclad strategy for the second map with the achievement for getting gold medals on all the challenges. I didn't even have to change up a single thing for any of the challenges.
Le sigh.
Still, they were pretty fun and worth the dollar.

Defense Grid got an update yesterday and at some point today a new paid DLC is getting released, as well. The update releases something like a few dozen new challenges on existing maps and five or six new challenge modes. The DLC is another map pack with a bunch of challenges and continues with their little partnership with Valve where GLaDOS is the villain.
Edit: Oops, might be some more days going by before the paid DLC part of it comes out.
