As a fan of both I am extremely pumped about this. Very little about Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance has leaked out of TGS so far, but one screen shot clearly shows TWEWY protaganist Neku Sakuraba in the picture, as well as new outfits for Sora and Riku. Here is a screenshot for you.

I liked the original Kingdom Hearts, but the whole series reminds me a lot of Megaman. It's a series that is likely to run out of funding/interest before it ever got close to explaining all the stuff is claims is actually in the series. Sure the gameplay is not bad too, but I don't really like going into a game where the mysteries will be revealed sometime in the next 15 years. Kingdom Hearts plays like a game that's just an ad for Kingdom Hearts 2 and that kind of stuff really bothers me, even though the game was actually really good.

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance is scheduled for release in Japan in Spring of 2012, so figure fall or holiday release over here.
Don as far as your point goes, Dream Drop Distance has been confirmed to be the final entry before the long awaited Kingdom Hearts 3, which will be the final apperence of long time villain Xehanort in the series. While there are plans to continue the series past Kingdom Hearts 3, and supposedly seeds for this have already been planted, a bulk of what we know now will be answered in Dream Drop Distance and Kingdom Hearts 3.
He has also said that he wants to do an HD remake of Kingdom Hearts 1 as a celebration of the tenth anniversary of the series, and also to serve as a test for doing the series in HD with Kingdom Hearts 3

It's okay to have great plans but I don't think I know of anything that pulled off unless you're talking about Star Wars and really Star Wars is still pretty self-contained even if you treat each episode like a separate entity.
Xenosaga is another series that comes to mind that never came anywhere close to its grand plans.
I think if you want to have epic series that span multiple games, Suikoden is probably the best way to go about it. The games are interconnected in a meaningful way but each game aren't dependent each other beyond some common themes. If at the end you've the ability to pull it altogether that's great, but otherwise it's no loss either. Kingdom Hearts started in 2002. If KH3 isn't even in development like I heard, I'm guessing it could be another 5 years or so before it's even done, so you might be looking at close to 15 years from start to finish. Kingdom Hearts isn't a game that's good enough to keep fans waiting for that kind of time.

They've been able to do so many of these HD re-releases of PS2 games on the PS3, there's no reason other than lack of desire on Squeenix's part for there not to be the 3 PS2 games on one collection in the near future.....maybe they'll even throw a dog a bone and put the PSP one on there too. The market will certainly want it, especially if it's right before KH3. If Konami's HD remakes do well in Japan, Squeenix may jump on board with some of their stuff

KH1 and KH2 HD remakes would be awesome. I can't wait for KH3D or KH3.

Unfortunatly they didn't show as much of Dream Drop Distance as I hoped they would at E3 but it is scheduled for a Spring 2012 release in Japan, so hopefully it will be here by the Fall of next year. Still what I have seen looks incredible!

The fact that the story is really well told and continuous across the games is one of the huge draws for me, I am always excited for the next game to see what mysteries get answered

Very interesting, I liked the The World Ends With You. I have all the Kingdom Hearts games, but haven't played through any of them yet. Perhaps I should start sometime soon.

Squeenix always talks about their "three pillars" of FF, DQ, and KH. But they REALLY need to released a proper, numbered sequel on the PS3, it's been what, 7 years since #2?
