"Nintendo's once nearly insurmountable lead in the video console sector has been lost, and its sales have fallen further and further behind rivals Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT - News) and Sony (NYSE: SNE - News). The rise of the Google (NASDAQ: GOOG - News) Android operating system has also encouraged video game publishers to make more products that run on that platform. The 2010 market share of Nintendo DS fell from 70% in 2009 to 57%. Nintendo's growth has also been damaged by the rise of the iPad and iPhone. The future is even grimmer. "iSuppli predicts Nintendo will sell 70 million 3DS gaming systems by 2015, a figure that is 21 million less than the 91 million in sales racked up by the original DS at the same point in its sales cycle," according to the Unofficial Apple Weblog. Nintendo announced an unexpected quarterly loss on July 28, and its shares plunged 20%. The stock is down from a 52-week high of 26,780 yen to 11,850 yen. In late 2007, shares reached 80,000 yen."

Didn't we talk a couple years ago about how Nintendo's stock was ridiculously over-valued? They should NEVER have been almost $800 a share, that was insane. It's like gold at over $1800 now, just retarded. Watch that shit drop quicker than a Wiimote out of Don's or Sine's hands once there is some stability somewhere in the world's economies

I think now is probably an ideal time to buy Nintendo stock while the prices are still devalued (it's up about 7.5% from its low in late August, but the current value can potentially double within a year). Many of the analysts are not considering that DS launched in November, vs. 3DS launching in April. When both systems are sitting aligned they're at 4.8 million (Sold 220K last week, up 3% from the previous week, likely due to Starfox's release). The 3DS also launched to an enormous amount of 3D-will-blind-your-children press and a $250 price point which damaged sales; after the reduction in price a couple of months ago, sales have been up to about 200K per week.
So when aligned to the original DS, they're about completely tied; DS will have the summer ahead and 3DS the holiday season ahead. Fast forward ahead 3.5 months, the DS will be up to 6.2 million, where will the 3DS be? Keep in mind, 3DS Mario and Mario Kart are coming up soon; Monster Hunter series to 3DS announced; and there is that inevitable Pokemon announcement; plus the Wii U release next fall (and very positive reports coming from developers,
including the most recent report from Crytek). So, with all of that ahead, and a lot of negativity behind; currently devalued stock; now is a very good time to buy (actually, August was the best time, but now is still very good).

Didn't I just say something about Nintendo not paying attention to the phone market? This is what happens. They need to jump into a "Nintendo" phone before anybody does (like Sony).
Also, they deserve to fall for not having anything worth buying for a while now. No huge games this year. The biggest thing they've advertised is Kirby.

They have been pushing this smaller IP they have called "Zelda" with a game coming out on the 20th as well.....
On the 3DS side, they've only got 2 tiny titles called "Mario Kart" and "Super Mario", nothing really worth spending time thinking about

I saw an interesting take on how the big 3 handle piracy.
Microsoft: Piracy wins.
PS3: Beat piracy by ensuring nobody wants to buy your system (or at least used to).
Nintendo: Beat piracy by ensuring only Nintendo games are worth playing, because that way your loyal fans still buy your game and nothing else is worth pirating.

Pushing? Like what? Skyward Sword is coming out on the 20th, but that's not out yet, and doesn't really do much for the previous quarters.

You mean the same games you can find on 50 other Nintendo systems? Reusing old IP is one thing, but Nintendo seems to have re-releasing of old games down to a science.
Can't you seriously give me some better titles than that for the entire year?

Sine, for Nintendo fans, those three games might as well be CoD, Battlefield, and Uncharted. We're not talking about small releases here. Mario and Mario Kart on DS sold for more than 4 years straight, they are the very definition of "evergreen" titles and move TONS of systems for Nintendo. And nothing in their library gets more hardcore than Zelda.
They may not have much coming right now, but these are the biggest titles you can get from the company

Actually, mid-October, might have been the best company to invest in. Stock values were undervalued, and they are sitting on a situation right now where they're only going to be increasing revenue.
1. 3DS is taking off; sales have been increasing gradually since the price drop in August (last week it sold nearly 400,000)
2. The Euro and the Dollar started gaining on the yen a few weeks ago, whether or not this trend will continue - I don't know. Much of the loss in previous quarters can be attributed to declining values of currency in their main markets.
3. The Wii U is on the horizon. Although we'll likely have to wait until January for more info.
Shares have been
increasing in value over the past few weeks; there's been a 13% increase since October 27th. So obviously there is increasing investor confidence.
As for getting into the phone business; that hasn't been working to well for either Microsoft or Sony, so I have my doubts Nintendo would do better than two companies with far more experience in that industry.

Microsoft's problem is they jumped into this phone thing with their own OS, and the phone OS market is already saturated. Android, Apple OS, Blackberry, etc. Of course, it's against their religion to do something like use Android for their phone, so the Windows phones end up as abysmal failures.
Sony just hasn't promoted enough and really push for developers on the platform. Fortunately, Sony has the experience in creating phone hardware, which is more than Nintendo can say about themselves.

Another factor is patents in the phone market. Despite Microsoft's own phones not doing well they (and Apple) reap huge amounts on licensing their patents to Android phone manufacturers; I am not sure the exact figures, but I do think Microsoft is generating almost as much profit off of their patents sold to competition as they are total revenue from Windows phones.
Nintendo would likely not be able to make a phone without making a deal with one or both Apple and Microsoft; which I don't think they'll want to do. They do, however, have deals with Sharp going all the way back to the GBA era, so who knows?

Patents are just a game. It has nothing to do with inventions or technology. Proof?
