In the meantime they're gonna start charging those monthly fees Nov/Dec for the crazy people that have stuck with it so far.

It's hard to predict what happens since nobody seems to be playing FF14 except the absolute diehards. It's not like Rift or WoW where you can get a good feel of the game's current state based on the fan reactions. FF14 news is pretty much always "LOL people still play this game?" or "I've been with this game since day 1, it's awesome".
MMORPG pretty much never get a chance to 'do over', but maybe there are enough crazies to keep the game going. I don't see anybody building an essentially new game in around 2 year either.
