Sony potentially bowing out after PS3

... Or at least skipping the next generation of home consoles. So PS4 might be a 2016 or 2017 console, if it comes at all

No official announcement has been made, but it will probably be coming soon.

Sony has been seeing disastrous financial trouble lately as their credit rating dropped to bbb-, which might be the motivation behind the potential move. Sony recently confirmed that there will be no PS4 at E3 2012, and they re-affirmed their 10 year generation plan earlier this week with the PS3. Sony had initially stated this as justification for investing in a PS3 in its early cycle, but then back-pedaled and stated that they meant they would be only supporting the PS3 for 10 years (until this week).

Another statement from SCE head raised eyebrows when he stated that
"From the SCE perspective, I think a lot rests on the success of PS Vita. We went through a very tough time in the company in getting to a point of profitability, and I think we're now beginning to enjoy the benefits of that – it gives us some more leeway in being able to look at the future and areas of new investment in terms of new business models and new approaches to gaming. It looks to be a far more positive year, I hope, than 2011, and one that yields great benefits to gamers around the world."
While really not that much to think about, in light of the possibility that no PS4 is planned, then it would be true that the Vita would be the only future of the division - and indeed it would logically follow that the division's future rests solely in the hands of the Vita (and to some extent the PS3).

The biggest statement comes from from CES when Gaikai's Chief product officer stated "Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3." We know for a fact it's not Nintendo, and it seems highly unlikely to be Microsoft that is being referred to (since all they need to do for next gen really is to release a next generation Kinect and upgrade their console to a quad core and that will be guaranteed success - whereas the PS Move essentially bombed).

Whether there is any truth to this or not will probably be announced soon. If it is Sony, I can't see them not making a statement before E3 about the future of their home console brand.

The longer Sony and MS take to launch their next consoles the better -- for me. I definitely do not want a new console until at least 2013. I imagine we'll see a new console announcement from one of them at E3, though the likelier of the two to do so, Microsoft, doesn't really need to yet, as the system apparently had its best sales year in 2011. On the other hand, where most of those consoles were probably Kinect bundles, we could see a Wii-like everyone-who-wants-one-already-has-one drop off in sales in 2012.

On second thought, I'd probably prefer it if MS released a new console in Q4 this year (unlikely as that may be), so that I could avoid launch madness, bugs, crappy software, and pick it up next year after a price drop.

As for Sony, I'd be shocked if they didn't release something new by 2014. Though they may be getting trounced in North America, they still own the console market in Japan. And though that market is smaller than ever, it's theirs to lose.

Uhhh no, there's no way Sony is bowing out of Gaming, I'm fairly sure that their Gaming Division is driving the profits home right now, while they're losing money on TVs(And have been for the past 8-10 years). Bottom line is they NEED their gaming division to be competitive and keep making games/consoles, they can't afford to drop out or fall behind in either race.

Also both the Move & Kinnect suck, with the Kinnect barely ahead in sales despite the headstart. -_-

Sony leaving the gaming market is as likely as Sine and Don throwing their PS3s and 360s out the window and swearing their allegiance to Nintendo and the Wii. Anyone who says anything different clearly has no idea how the business world works. It's not even worth trying to argue the point

There's no way Sony is bowing out.

But I wish they would, to make way for a new console from SEGA. :)

I know the 360 is basically the Dreamcast 2, but I need a dedicated console for my Shenmue dreams.

Also, I seriously don't get the "Gross."

To add to my above post: Sony just posted a loss of 2 billion USD for the holiday season quarter; PS3 hardware sales came in behind the 3DS, Xbox 360, and the Wii.

Howard Stringer is being replaced by Kaz Hirai as CEO of Sony.

Their Gaming Division is turning a profit now, again, not a really good chance for them to just bow out of one of their profitable sectors, even if they're behind their competitors.

Ever since the PS2 era, I feel as if all i hear is Sony losing money. Are the reporters always trying to take them down or do they bleed money like no ones business yet have a ton in reserves? For all the bad financial Sony news i've read you would think they are bankrupt. I'm a fucking CPA, i guess i could look up their annual and quarterly reports, but even those are confusing with how the company is structured. So many entities, investments, and consolidations...

SCEA makes money but the company as a whole has been struggling for many years. PS brand helps them a lot but the company is too big

Nor do I. Why the fuck would I have PS3? Hell, I have two 360s, which is the first time I've ever owned two of the same system.
