"I prefer treasure whose value can be measured"

This was a quote from Balthier when Ashe attempted to pawn off a 'treasure whose value cannot be measured' to pay for his services, but it's also something that can be said about any game where there's some kind of performance metric. It can be win/loss, some rating system, or DPS done or whatever else, but you always hear people who perform badly tell you something akin to 'my contribution goes beyond the numbers'. Well, just like it's true in FF12, if your value cannot be measured it's probably not very valuable. There are obviously exceptions, but it can't be the case everyone's an exception. Besides, you sure don't see the guys talking about metrics are useless if they happen to be top of the metrics.
The real funny one is DPS, especially in a PvP game. People will tells you apparently there's the kind of damage that kills people, versus some type of damage that does NOT kill people, so despite you doing way more damage than they do, they 'did damage when it counted'. Of course you can probably show that guy that you do more killing blows (it's really hard to do significantly more total DPS) but then they'll tell you that killing blows do not tell the story either. I can almost see this like a TV show, like you'd have some analysis running a 'play of the day' would be saying like: "You see Bob here cast a Fireball that brought the guy's HP from 7500 to 6525. This caused a cascading effect that ultimately lead to the team being victorious 10 minutes later and is thus our play of the day."
