The Nintendo DS has become the king of video game platforms. As of the week ending December 8, it topped the PlayStation 2 for the best selling platform, according to VGChartz. The DS has sold 153.69 million units, while the PlayStation 2 has sold 153.68 million units.

The DS and PlayStation 2 are the only platforms to have sold 150 million or more units, while the Game Boy and original PlayStation have sold 100 million or more units. The Game Boy has sold 118.69 million units and the PlayStation 104.25 million units. Also the Wii is nearing 100 million units sold. It currently stands at 98.05 million and should cross 100 million during the first quarter 2013.

This is the third big announcement for video games for the week ending December 8. The PlayStation 3 passed the 70 million mark, and the 3DS topped the PlayStation 3 in Japan.
On an additional note, 3DS will pass 25 million next week reaching that mark in 1 year and 8.5 months, the original DS took 1 year and 10 months to achieve this. On average, the 3DS manages to outsell the lifetime total of the Playstation Vita every 93 days since the 3DS launched.

That's somewhat the point, considering this is a massive lifetime achievement. When discussing the highest selling gaming system in history, it's always going to he about a system that's been around for years.

Actually, given just how old the DS is, that's actually a bad stat. Nintendo has been bad about updating its portable systems. Remember how long Gameboy lasted before they FINALLY decided to release the DS? Even then, they took forever fixing the backlight problem.

The DS released 1 year before the Xbox 360. It's sold nearly 155 million; more than any other dedicated videogame system of any class has ever sold; an amazing stat no matter how you try to spin it.

I thought handheld system held the 'most systems sold' title for the vast majority of history of gaming simply because it's cheaper? Wasn't GB comfortably ahead of NES/SNES even in an era nothing challenged Nintendo? Probably easier to rack up numbers in a field that never had any serious challenge to Nintendo too.

GB was comfortably ahead because it sold in various iterations for what, 17 years? The others had 7 or 8 years of sales, the PS2 closer to 10.

The consoles up until last gen generally sold more in a shorter period but the GB line and now DS and PSP have longer stayin' power. It shifted last gen
