That's the dumbest angle for a console commercial I've ever seen. About as dumb as putting all of Sony's eggs in the Bluray basket. It's not a console; it's a TV appliance.

I dunno.. marketing is sometimes about grabbing people who aren't aware of the product already. Gamers are already at the table. Why not have a commercial that brings a new audience? An awful lot of people use them as glorified television appliances as it is. You certainly aren't changing someone's console allegiance with a commercial. Granted no one is going to buy it as a glorified appliance, but maybe you'd be less against someone else in your household getting it if you knew it had some uses for you as well.

Bingo. They don't need to tell gamers about the Xbox One. They already know and will make their decision without any commerical being shown. These are for everyone else that represents 80% of the market

Okay, but:

1. It's the first commercial. That's not a very good impression to say "Hey, we don't give a shit about the games".

2. If you're going to showcase non-gaming functionality, at least find stuff that nobody else can do or isn't so niche.

3. 80% of the market? Which ass did you pull that number from? Most folks are buying a gaming console for gaming. The appliance stuff is just a nice bonus.

3) The 80% is a guesstimate. I'm going by the old rule of 80% of the revenues come from 20% of the people (may actually be skewed more than that: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/arch ... amers.aspx). Regardless, there's a large chunk of gamers or potential gamers (about 87% of the US population, apparently: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/v ... mes-295720) who need reasons other than games to buy a system. Why do you think they're focusing so much on the non "hardcore" gamers? They figure the hardcores will make their decisions based on something other than a TV commercial so no need to even tell them the thing exists, they already know. It's the other, much larger non-hardcores they're trying to get the message to. They may not even buy a gaming console. But if they can get it for other things (such as over half the Netflix users connecting via consoles: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/half- ... -nintendo/) they may be able to get a non-traditional audience (you know, the one the Wii captured so well) to buy their system.

Hmmm... I guess this is what happens when a huge chunk of the games are not exclusive.

Yeah. Imagine one of them was able to get Nintendo exclusively on their consoles? What an enormous advantage that would be the way gaming is nowadays
