Finally, Nintendo starts to correctly market a game

So far, Nintendo's marketing for the Wii U has been atrocious; there best efforts have been with Smash, but even that has been weak to subpar in comparison to Nintendo's past marketing efforts. I think Mario Kart 8 is the first time where I haven't really thought more on the negative about the marketing - at this rate, it might be Nintendo's best marketed non-Pokemon game so far this decade.

On a side note, Nintendo has REALLY stepped up the production of their Directs and videos lately, they're a lot better than previous Directs. The first one that really grabbed me was a short one about Tomodochi World released earlier this month, but Mario Kart 8 is the first full length one of a mainstream game.

Marketing not perfect yet, they still don't have any commercials; but it's a good start. This feels like the first Wii U game that I am getting hyped about through Nintendo's marketing efforts - rather than through my own research and video analysis of trailers that are vaguely informative at best. Now if I get spammed with Mario Kart 8 commercials on youtube in the next month, I'll be happy. I am definitely optimistic about the future if they give THIS sort of treatment to Zelda U and Xeno-U.

Ha! You wish. It would be a cold day in hell before Nintendo releases a Mario game no PS.

Eric, these giant images you keep posting are obnoxious.

I am going to drop this thread and start a new one after the results of Mario Kart's launch are known.

Nope, a 24 inch Gateway monitor using google chrome, display set to 1980 x 1080. Each image is about the height of my screen though.

Are you not set to max resolution? The biggest image is 702 x 832 and the others are smaller then that

I'm @ work on a 17" @ 1280 x 1024 and it's not even close to taking up the height of the screen. x_x

Reminds me of "56k warning!" in a subject line.

Eric, you're banned.

Mario Kart 8 sold 1.2 million over the weekend. To put it into perspective, it is about 400% better than Super Mario 3D World launched in the holiday season. It took an entire month leading up to Christmas in order for Mario 3D World to hit 1.2 million - NSMB U, the next most successful took 6 weeks. This is a fairly major success for the Wii U, and the first game that has done well.

Maybe it could have been that they advertised this time around?

Advertising was definitely stronger, also I think this was the first major Wii U game all year?

Saleswise, it's the first major game on the system so far. The week 1 sales of all other top titles amount to about 250K-300K during the first week, all of those released in the holiday season where demand includes gift-buyers. These include Zelda WW HD and Super Mario World HD which released last fall and were arguably the first major Wii U games since NSMBU a year earlier - if you don't include New Super Luigi U which launched end of Spring 2013 - but even if you combine the first week sales of the three major games together, they still fall significantly short of 1.2 million. In fact, those 1.2 million make Mario Kart 8 already the 5th best selling game on the console.

Mario Kart 8 was the first game on the system that was backed by a decent marketing campaign. It was easily the best Nintendo Direct that Nintendo had ever done - taking the format and instead of looking like one big infomercial, it actually was creative and had a narrative. There have also been several TV commercials made for the game, and other promotional deals.

I'll probably be getting a Wii U in the next few weeks, I'm quitting my current job and I have these total return points saved up, but I'm short the 1k I need for an Xbox One, so I'll just get a Wii U instead.
