  • Tekken 4 hits L.A.

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

<div style='font: 12pt Arial; text-align: justify; padding: 0% 8% 0% 8%; '>It is at my arcade. YEAH BABY BABY!!!!!!

Impressions:

1. It's beautiful.
2. It's hard as hell.
3. I blow at it.

Using Christie Monteiro (similar to Eddy), I was not able to win ONE
ROUND against the computer last night (though if you think you're better than I am, check the difficulty setting on your arcade's version of it). But now that I'm back in L.A. from Stanford for a month, tonight is gonna be the King of Iron Fist tournnament when all my Tekken skillz are put to the test as the local crew converges at Sherman Oaks Castle Park. CAPOEIRA!!!!!

A few more serious observations: It seems a much slower game than Tekken 3, in both speed and strategy. Your favorite moves from Tekken 3 will work - but not without some practice. Combos seem diminished, but this is probably just due to the game being so new.

Counters are very, very important now, as well as dodges. Your favorite power moves, like Kazuya's quadruple-spinning dragon uppercut, now look so slow that WE could punch Kaz in the kidney while he sets it up...again, there ma be ways of effective use that differ from T3. Paul seems to be almost more of a finesse character now, with graceful punches and counters.

I'm heading back to play today. But I'm waiting for all of you to play and give impressions. HWOOOOOOOAAAAAAARAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Arial; text-align: justify; padding: 0% 8% 0% 8%; '>Nope, at least not that anyone knows. The time-release characters will show up over the next several months, though I doubt Bryan would make the list. There's a new character named Steve who has a lot of similar fast punches, but more of them and no kicks and less combos.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Arial; text-align: justify; padding: 0% 8% 0% 8%; '>Okay. It seems that I don't, indeed, blow at Tekken 4 after all (the machine was set to Ultra Stupid Hard that day) and with it reset I beat the machine on two plays. So that is happy.

Paul is definitely not a finesse player. He's the same beatstick we all know well, once you get used to the more glacial pace and precise timing required for moves. Matter of fact, it's disturbingly similar to T3, with the important exceptions of speed, easier dodges, and wall combos. Combos are as important as ever...</div>

<div style='font: 11pt "EngraversGothic BT", "Copperplate Gothic Light"; text-align: left; '>Besides, I remember playing Tekken 3 and calling everything cheap, but after experimenting with the cheap moves a little bit, we realized that it wasn't that cheap. Moves in this game are no different. King has a punch-punch-throw combo that looks really cheap, but isn't that bad. Steve has a low move that LOOKS mid, which is pretty damn good, but not exactly unbalanced. (It's funny because my friend will now announce "Going loooow!" about a half-second before doing the move, and you still fuck up and don't block it.)</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Arial; text-align: justify; padding: 0% 8% 0% 8%; '>...so you have to break them with something like straight 3 or 4 which just goes back to facing each other. Also, if you play someone good, her combos are incredibly blockable, and as far as I've played she's TERRIBLE when backed up to the wall. Her strongest feature is her unpredictability, but she's best used against newer players, at least that I've seen.</div>

<div style='font: 9pt ; text-align: left; '>No, not really. Eddy is really strong in Tekken 3. He isn't as strong in TT, but Christie is much weaker than either due the way location and movement work in T4.</div>
