  • Whoah! I actually just had an extremely fun game of Civilization 3, I altered the rules to make things a bit more interesting....

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

<div style='font: 12pt ; text-align: left; '>Rules I altered, Roads now carry units 8 spaces instead of 3
Settlers now cost 3 population points instead of 2
Minimum science discovery time: 30 turns instead of 40 (though it was orriginally 32 before the last patch, I found this didn't really benefit me any since I had my science rate up at 80 or 90% for most of the game)

Just altering those two things makes a world of difference, seeing as how roads and railroads in enemy and neutral territories offer no movement bonuses, I figured the old 1/3rd movement point cost from Civilization 2 (Which people normally played on smaller sized maps) was outdated.

Settings:

Map: Standard sized Earth (strange thing, the person who made this map absolutly sucked in Geography, there's no Italy, Great Lakes/st. Lawrence river region, no Greece, UK is screwed, Japan is screwed to hell, and Greenland is one of the best locations in the game.

Civilization: Chinese, ended up in China (I know that there's no option for starting in the proper locations or something).

Opponents: 7, Japanese, Indians, French, Germans, Babylonians, Zulu, and Persians. I figured this number would make for the most interesting game, I was right.

Difficulty: Monarch (I almost always play this level, but once in a while I try something more challenging, anything lower and the game just isn't fun anymore)

Anyways, I started out and expanded all over China, discovered the Indians in North Africa who expanded through the Middle East, the Japanese to the North of me in Mongolia, French I discovered later, they were in South Africa, and Germans were in Continental Europe. I expanded south Building cities in India and Thailand, sent Galley's over to Japan (or Islands that slightly resemble Japan) and colonized that area too with two cities, and sent another Galley to Taiwan. The Indians Expanded to Spain, the UK, and Norway, the French had cities in Europe Sweden and Finland, the Japanese stayed in the North and Colonized the harsh terrain of Russia.

I was focusing mainly on building up my cities, keeping a great economy and staying on top of sciences. The Germans eventually decided I would be easy prey and declared on me, luckily the Japanese and Indians who were close trading partners agreed to declare back on them for no price, and Germany lost some border cities and teir capital city was destroyed, then peace, Germany rebuilt quickly.

Once I discovered Navigation I sailed with Settlers to the newly discovered Mexico (sometime in the 800's) and built a city there, there were Persian Cities all around, so I used up all of my emergiency funds to rushbuild a Temple, Library, Cathedral, Colleseum, University, and Courthouse in a relatively short time, I built 3 more cities in the area but due to corruption they had almost no production value, I built a Forbidden Palace in Macao (my first city in Mexico) and that ended the corruption. I noticed that on the Western side of North America were the ruins of the Babylonian Civilization in control of the Persians, the Babylonians must have been destroyed before I got here. In South America were the Zulu's who were warring the Persians, the Persians were slowly making their way through Central America.

Built a city in the Uninhabited Australia for resources. The Persians now in contact with the rest of the world quickly grew to become the most powerful nation in the game. They started making demands of me, I gave in, signed a Mutual Protection pact with my Gracious friends India and Japan, and then when the Persians demanded technology from me again, I told them to go to hell, they declared. Suddenly one of my cities was surrounded by Infantry, luckily by this time I had Advanced Armor and Mech Infantry, I was ahead in Sciences. I got bombed to hell the next turn and I am serious, I must have went through about 100 battles because the Persians took about 10 minutes attacking my citity with Infantry in one turn, in the end, I had two new War heroes, the Persians failed, but they managed to get all 10 Units I had in the city down to 1 HP, destroyed 3 of my Mech Infantries I had there. Those were all my losses. Japan and India declared on Persia, France and Germany soon followed, and the Zulu's broke through Persian defenses and began attacking North. I put my Sciences down to 0% and had an income of about 900 Gc per turn, enough to finance my growing Army. The Persians retreated from their offense against me to defend their lands, unfortuanetly, the Zulu's were too weak to make much of an offensive, they had about 15-20 Cavalry units to their name, everyone else was fighting Persia at sea and grabbing some other Cities they had in North Easern Asia and Indonesia.

Two transports full of Advanced Armor landed in Mexico from China, we started taking 1-3 cities per turn, their Advanced Infantry (6/10) was no match for the Advanced Armor (24/16) and we soon swept over North America, I was surprised when I saw that they were still alive, I could find no Persian cities remaining, then I thought of earlier when I saw a Persian Transport heading South, I sent ships to investigate and found that whoever made the map remembered about Hawaii at least, I made peace with them, I didn't want that City and my people were rebelling because of War Weariness. I immedietly put everything into Sciences again and was soon way ahead of everyone, We Love the Kings Day Celebrated everywhere. I built about 10 wonders and minor wonders in this time, and started Stocking up on Nukes, and soon after ICBM's (unlimited Range). I saved and tested some of my new Toys on France, better sound and WAY better graphical effects than Nukes in Civ 2. unfortuanetly, despite how fun it was nuking France, I noticed that everyone hated me now. By the time I built the United Nations, I had 8 ICBM's and 3 Tactical Nukes which I placed in Subs that are right now sitting in the Mediteranean. I won the Vote and got the rank "Mao the Fair", but of course I saved it beforehand, the year is 1898, I don't plan to end it here, I'm going for a Spaceship win this time =)

After that, I'll have won by every single means except culture. Oh yeah, and if you're wondering, 4 of the 5 top cities are mine, the third ranked one is Calcutta India. My cities in Asia are the biggest in the world, the only area in the demographics where I wasn't ranked 1st was Military service years (I was last), but I was first for everything else, and had an 85% Approval rating =)

Overall, this has possibly been the most fun I have had with Civ 3 this far.</div>
