  • My Metroid Prime experience, somewhat sullied by incompetence.  Has this ever happened to anyone else?

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

<div style='font: 9pt ; text-align: left; '>So a couple weeks ago, I got off my butt and finally got myself an X-Box and a GameCube. Picked up all the games I've wanted to play for months now - Panzer Orta, JSRF, KOTOR, Prime, Wind Waker, Monkey Ball 2, and SCII(GC). Started off with Orta, beat it, beat it again on Hard mode, was satisfied with that.

Moved on to Prime. Had major issues with the controls at the beginning, was sort of lost for a while. Eventually got way into it and started loving it as I was playing it. Got most of the way through, beat the Elite Pirate (and turned from Gravity Samus into Total Fucking Badass Samus as you know) and finally discovered the "item humming noise". Turned the music volume down so I could hear it better, started wandering around the world looking for stuff, found a whole bunch of it, and got up to 96%. You'd figure all was well.

Problem was, one of the (4? 5?) items I hadn't found was the Ice Spreader, which, after I fought Metroid Prime's first form and got my arse kicked, I figured I needed (since the Ice Beam is slow as shit and I could barely hit the fucker when he went into Ice Beam form). For whatever reason, I'd missed it. I tried thinking back to where the other charge beam combos had been hidden and figured it was in its own room or whatever, but I couldn't think of where the hell it could be. I thought I'd already gone through Magmoor (found the artifact hidden in the pillar without getting the clue first, even) and had somehow missed the noise going through the damned tunnel, so I spent like two hours or so painstakingly going through every inch of the Wrecked Frigate, Phazon Mines, and Phendrana Drifts, and it was getting late on Sunday night.

I went to bed frustrated, ended up checking out an FAQ on Monday to see where the hell the damn thing was, as I really didn't feel like spending another two hours painstakingly checking every room on the god damned planet when I've got a ton more games to play. And then I got really pissed when I got home Monday evening, walked in the Shore Tunnel, and heard what I thought was the loudest item humming noise yet - <i>how the hell had I missed it????</i> I grabbed it and saved as I had things to do that night, and then I finally got around to taking on Metroid Prime last night and took him down on my second try (third try officially).

The thing that really pisses me off is that the Ice Spreader is the weapon that makes Prime clam up and scurry across the room the fastest - you land one shot with the damn thing, he gets frozen, you pop off a couple more shots, he breaks out of it, boom, you're done with that form. Hell, it's really the only other useful charge combo besides Super Missiles (the Wavebuster and Flamethrower don't do nearly enough damage for the amount of missiles they suck down). And without it, you're screwed because you can't even hit Prime in that form, as I said earlier. And it was the <i>only</i> major item I missed (I had 240 missiles and 8 power bombs at the end, so I'm guessing I missed two of each expansion as well).

So here I am, just having finished this great game, and instead of being psyched that I finished it, I'm mostly pissed at myself for having to use an FAQ to find a very essential item. This ever happened to any of you folks, or am I alone in my suckyness?

P.S. Thanks for letting me rant.</div>

<div style='font: 9pt ; text-align: left; '>My first playthrough I missed the Ice Spreader and I think one of the other wave combos. On Hard I found it, because I realized the similarity to Super Metroid. But yes, I can't imagine beating the game on Hard without finding it.</div>

<div style='font: 9pt ; text-align: left; '>Well done. You managed to not make me feel so bad and then feel bad again in the same sentence. : )</div>

<div style='font: 9pt ; text-align: left; '>Missing either one of the other wave combos really wasn't a big deal - aside from Super Missiles and the Ice Spreader in that one situation against Prime, they were pretty much useless. Although some people have said they beat Meta-Ridley with the Wavebuster, but took 240 missiles or so to do it. There's frugality for ya.

More ranting on the Ice Beam: I mean, when you're getting pummeled by three Flying Pirates, take an Ice Beam shot at one of them only to have it miss completely, and then have it take forever to fire - and miss! - again, while still getting pummeled by all three of them, that's what I call annoying.

And don't even get me started on how long it takes to switch beams (especially while facing Fission Metroids). All I can say is thank goodness you can kill them with the Phazon beam while fighting Prime's second form.

<div style='font: 9pt ; text-align: left; '>Yeah, it was a bit hidden. But the Super Metroid thing made me search those rooms like crazy. And Prime is easier with it, MUCH easier</div>
