It's powerful and necessary for efficient grouping. And damn fun.

<div style='font: 9pt ; text-align: left; '>Renkei is one tool that is used, and yes, it's immensely powerful.

Competent groups will start trying to use it in the mid to high teens. Initial impressions may seem unfavorable, because you can only chain together limited combinations, and the resultant elemental effects (and elemental magic bursts) are either going against critter strengths, or unable to take advantage of their weaknesses.

Once people get more and varied weaponskills, and mages have access to all the elements, you can do serious damage with them. Takes a little bit of practice to get used to, but once you know the timing, you're set for life - then it's just a matter of figuring out which chain(s) to use in your party and communicating well enough with your party member to let them know when to let 'er rip.

What's even better is you can burst multiple times during a single longer renkei, and if you're using a weaponskill, you can even burst afterwards (a few times where I was meleeing as RDM I would lead off a 3 weaponskill chain, then burst a Fire spell onto the end of the chain). I enjoy magic bursting enough that I chose a black mage sub over a white mage sub with my RDM primary (though I imagine eventually I'll pick up WHM for flexibility).

It's one of the reasons that this game's combat is more than just "Hit A and pray", and it adds some spice to grouping. Renkei aren't the only reasons that Japanese players seem to have the quick levelling down, but it's part of an efficient, successful group.</div>
