Sega announced the online service fee for the PS2/PC online RPG Phantasy Star Universe, the cost for the first 30 days is 1260 yen (US$10.5), an additional 1050 yen (US$8.7) for subsequent months. PC and PS2 players can play on the same game servers.

Now, I may have this backwards, but aren't things supposed to be cheaper/free in the first month and then more expensive later, not the other way around?

Usually, but that's here. Maybe Sega feels that in Japan there's going to be A TON that want it right away and are willing to pay more?

It looks more like they figure a lot of people will bail after one month.
