If you want a good DDR pad, pretty much constructing one would be your best bet. Soft pads are more known for ankle and wrist injuries since you slide off the pad with socks on. Also, buying a used pad is not a good idea either. You get some 250Lbs kid doing workouts on it, then it breaks and it ends up on e-bay. As for the game, the new DDR2 Max Extreme got good reviews from G4.

Well I meant a used game but a new pad on ebay. Theres a bunch there for sale.
Im not gonna get anything super nice as far as the pad, because most likely she will get bored with it after a couple of months. If she really gets into it, she can get herself a nice one.

The DDR Extreme 2 w/pad pack is pretty good, and the pad has high-friction material on the bottom so that unlike a lot of other soft pads it doesn't slip around while you play. I play at a pretty demanding level and can still use it well. And DDR Extreme 2 has a pretty good music selection. So I'd go with that - should be pretty cheap, $50 or similar new and cheaper than that even if you go used. If she really gets into it, like you said, at that point she can invest in a pair of high-end pads.

I've heard good things about the pad that RedOctane makes, but that may be higher end.
If the quality on the Guitar Hero guitar is anything to go by, they do make quality goods.

We usually just tape them down.

It's soft, but not padded. It's a fine pad, though, especially for someone who may or may not be into it long-term.

I got her the DDR Extreme 2 Bundle. 59.99 at Best Buy
Sine played Guitar Hero while he was there getting it. We may get that somewhere down the road as well.
Both of them would be great for parties

Only if there isn't much alcohol involved, otherwise people are going to fall and break things. You have no idea how much of a disastor DDR + Alcohol can become =P
It's a good get together thing, getting 8-15 people together, just take turns on it.

I just bought one of those DDR rip-off things for like $20 that has the music and all built into the pad. My fiancee enjoys playing her sister's DDR games sometimes. I haven't taken it out of the box yet to see how well it works.
