Hmmmm, with Nirvana and STP there are many better songs they could have picked. For some reason I had it in my head that they were going to use Plush by STP which would have been a much better song.

They should have Helter Skelter, some rendition of Roadhouse Blues, and Crazy Train on the next one.

Remember, they tend to pick cheaper songs so they can a) make more money and b) fit more songs into the budget. So, they pay for a couple of big titles that EVERYONE knows, such as Sweet Child, Freebird, and Strutter, then settle for cheaper songs by bigger bands, like the Van Halen, Aerosmith, and STP songs. I mean, who doesn't want to see a Metallica song (ANY Metallica song) or Thunderstruck? But they're too much 'cause of their popularity

It's too bad the people who handle song licensing for the bands don't realize that inclusion in something like this is more like advertising. I imagine a lot of people bought albums because of the songs in Guitar Hero. And unlike, say, mp3s, you can't exactly load up GH every time you want to hear a song.

Kupek makes a very good point. It's not just newer albums that will sell either, there's still room to market older ones. Even though many of us know the last 40 years of music history, there are many people who really have no clue. My current roomate (She just turned 20) thinks Fred Durst wrote Behind Blue Eyes, that Madonna's beat for Hung Up was one of the most creative things she developed in her career, and that DJ Sammy's We're in Heaven is a great example of how DJs can write masterful love songs. Point being, many of todays youth know very little about music; and I hate using the word 'youth' because the example I just used is just a few years younger than me =P

Anyways, when they hear good music, they might consider purchasing it.

I trust their song choices.

Well, that's sort of what I was talking about, Heart Shaped Box was Nirvana's #3 single (after Lithium and Smells Like Teen Spirit), but it is far from the most fun song to play. STP have a lot of great guitar songs off of their first couple of albums, I was excited about Plush =P

And yeah, I still do NOT understand why there's no Crazy Train =P

They had that issue with GH1, which is why a lot of bands they wanted to get they weren't able to. From what the developers have said, more bands want to be in it now, but it's all about the licencing. You're not gonna have too many Primus' deliver the master to them to get it done in time for E3. And a lot of the record companies (and Metallica) don't give a shit if it's good advertising. They want thier money for Red Octane making money off their song, period.

Getting good advertising is secondary to making the money; either that or it's a minimum requirement to allowing the song to be used to make money. I can bet there's a band or two out there that wanted to get their song in the game but, due to budgetary issues, Red Octane decided to go with cheaper songs that are fun to play, which is their requirement for picking a song.

I don't think there are too many people who would be unhappy with songs like Thunderstruck or Stairway to Heaven being in the game, but these are still very profitable songs for record companies, they ain't gonna give it away for free just because it's good advertising. Thus the inclusion of lesser-known songs or secondary songs of popular bands with a couple of really big titles thrown in (hello Sweet Child and Freebird) to sweeten the pot.
