Gamestop was nice enough to let me know that they were having a midnight launch, so I picked up mine last night along with Twilight Princess. Having fun with it so far. Controlling Link feels way more natural than it should be. You can slash while running without slowing down, and using the Wiimote to fire projectiles is a breeze. Fishing is a little awkward, but that might change once I upgrade my rod. Haven't touched WiiSports yet, or used any of the channels, though.

So what are your general impressions?

I'm going to need to take a leave of absence from the 'net until December 7th, I think. My heart aches even now.

I'll be picking up mine at midnight. I'll probably get Call of Duty 3 to go with it (pre-ordered Zelda online, was going to get the console online until I saw how much they were bundling the shit out of it).

My friends and I have played much Wii Sports, Zelda, and Red Steel so far. I have to say that so far impressions are very positive all around ^_^ I am loving this thing very very much ^_^

Red Steel is getting very mixed reactions from some very reputable websites: IGN gave it a 6.0, but Famitsu gave it a 34/40 (which makes it their second highest ranked next gen game, behind Zelda). I haven't had a chance to play it yet. Wii Sports is a lot of fun: the boxing sucks, but the rest is quite fun; and it is a game that everyone loves to play.

Zelda, well, finally I have a game that I clearly like better than Ocarina of Time. I'll write a more full response on this later on when I get the opportunity to play more than I have (I still do not have a Wii, the line-ups were too long even the night before, but I have had a chance to play one).

Anyways, at launch, I think the idea of giving out wristbands with numbers on them was a VERY smart idea. As far as I have heard, no violence.

I had a pretty good time with mine on Sunday. Lots of Wii Sports with my buds, it's a great pick-up-and-play game. Played a good chunk of Excite Truck as well. It's worth of the $20 I paid for it, but that's about it. It's fun and feels oddly natural but there's not a huge amount of depth to it. Enough as a distraction, but not so much else. Trauma Centre plays just as well as as the DS version and as you'd expect it to. The forsnips are pretty neat, you have to push both A and B at the same time. I haven't had the chance to play Zelda yet.

I'll have to give Nintendo credit on one thing: the Miis. I made myself relatively quickly and didn't think too much of it. My wife, cuz, and friends were havin' a wild time making themselves. They probably spent as much time on that as they did on games. My bud and wife don't really play games much, so it appears, at least with my small sample, that Nintendo is at least making it interesting for non-gamers.

One weird technical issue though. For whatever reason, my controllers wouldn't synch up to the system after we had been playing it for a bit. They just wouldn't work, basically. All I had to do was unplug the system (turning it off manually didn't work) and it was fine after that, but it was kinda weird.

And my one gripe: you can't turn off just the controller, you HAVE to turn off the system. So, if you have two people playing, you can't just turn that controller off, it'll turn the system off. Annoying, really annoying. I thought with Microshaft having worked that out with the 360 we wouldn't be having this issue anymore.

Heh, I still play Animal Crossing a few times a week regularly =P

There is a version of it coming to the Wii, but I don't think console is nearly as good of a platform for it as is the DS.

Picked up my Wii today with Zelda. Just have to track down a copy of Trauma Center now.

Trauma Center is a good secondary game. I haven't played it yet, but I am guessing that Monkey Ball would be a good third. Just because of the concept, a lot of people don't give games like this one a chance.

Another I am really waiting for is the new Splinter Cell, I am really interested in seeing how they integrate the controller into that kind of gameplay.

if you press the home button and press the bar at the bottom of the screen that has the battery levels of all the remotes you can resync your remotes so that you can have different player 1 and 2 remotes... from here if you don't sync the remotes back in they just turn off.
That's such a roundabout way of doing it. It's quicker just to take the battery cover off and take one battery out for a sec then put it back in. They HAVE to fix that...

If it was another thread, I'd apologize to Kali and Lotus for using "Microshaft" again, but I doubt either will even wander into here :-)

Just because I don't plan on getting a Wii for a while (gonna grab Zelda for the GC) doesn't mean I wouldn't read this thread, Zeus, you homo!

Besides, I still haven't finished FF12, Gears of War (sidetracked with the wicked multi), or Guitar Hero 2 (on hard anyway).

Alright, I have had a go at a few of the games. My opinions on some of the games:

Zelda, easily the best game available, currently on next gen and current gen systems; this game I forsee outselling Ocarina of Time.

Monkey Ball and Trauma Center: despite having the simpler concepts of all the Wii games, these ones are actually very well done, I really enjoy both of them.

Call of Duty 3 and Red Steel: Now I had heard bad things about Red Steel, and I didn't think Call of Duty 3 would be very good (I hate war period shooters on paper, but this one isn't bad), but both of these games are actually quite fun. Red Steel has some quirks to it (such as turning), but it is a fun game. IGN rates it at the bottom of the pack so far, but I disagree with them here. A lot of people would rank Call of Duty 3 as the #2 Wii game, but I feel that is mainly because they ignored Monkeyball and Trauma Center.

Wii Sports, obviously people will enjoy this one.

Madden and Excite Truck, these games got a lot of praise from reviewers, they just aren't my taste. I don't enjoy them at all.

I just came in this thread cause I knew you'd be in here - and I wanted to apologize for not talking on Live but I was naked and streaming porn to my 360 when you buzzed...

Heh.

My online time is often later at night, although Zelda is going to be taking some of that time now. I am still trying to get through GoW on Hardcore to earn myself some more achievements, but if it gets too frustrating, I may just end up playing PGR3 or PDZ

Anyone heard of the error code 110213 when updating the Wii online?

I just so happened to be the unlucky recipient of such a message. what does it mean? My Wii is a brick (well kind of).

Ok that's the bad news. The good news is that it basically doesn't effect me at all. I can play my games, move my saves to my SD card, all while I wait for the replacement Nintendo is sending me (they said it should be here by Saturday).

From the Magic Box:

W i i

- UNCONFIRMED: Numerous Wii owners reported that their Wii console broken down after downloading a system update from the WiiConnect24 service. After the update, the systems would only display the error code "110213" on screen. This problem can only be fixed by sending the consoles back to Nintendo for repair.

One game that I picked up that no one here seems to have is GT Pro Series. Its been getting terrible reviews, but I wanted the wheel shell if nothing else so I picked it up. Graphicly its not much, but gameplay wise its a lot of fun. It plays out more like an arcade racer, and not a simulation type. And there seems to be plenty of upgrades and vehicles to unlock so it should keep me busy for a while ^_^ Just thought I would let people know

As for other titles, I am working on getting to the 3rd dungeon on Zelda now. This game is just continualy getting more and more incredible. I was kinda dissapointed that you dont get to draw the bow yourself like I had heard you do, but all in all still a very entertaining game so far. The 2nd dungeon fucked with my head. I dont want to give spoilers but they made VERY creative use of the steel boots.

Red Steel I have cleared I think 5 storyline missions so far and it has been a very fun game. It is getting quite chalenging as well where I am at, oftentimes you find youself outgunned 6-10 to one. But I think my favorate part of this game however is how interactive they made the environments. For example when I went into the kitchen in the first stage and shot the stove and it blew up, or how you can knock the pans off the celing. I just went through a stage that was an auto garage, you can guess the fun booms I had there. My one gripe about the multiplayer is the melee attack. It just has too much range for what it does, as it knocks you out for about 3 seconds, plenty of time for your opponet to off you.

As far as Wii Sports goes, I dont think I even have to go there ^_^ Way too much fun all around.

Also I bought my first couple of Virtual Console games. Picked up Altered Beast, Bonk, and Zelda. For those who dont already know the VC stuff fills the extra screens on the menu when you turn the system on. Classic controler handles very well, and I found redeming my Wii Points certificate very easy to do. No high speed at my place yet (I took my system to a friends to get on his 10MB connection) so I havent gotten to do any Mii sharing yet, but all of my friends have made their own miiple so far and I like how in Wii Sports Baseball the other Mii's show up as other players on the teams. I also like how you can store your miiple onto your wiimote for transit to another system when you take it to a friends place.

Anyway guess that is about all for now. I defidently want to pick up Metal Slug collection, Super Swing Golf (PangYa), and Madden still, but its when I can afford em. Hoping to get lots of Game Stop gift cards for xmas so I can get another game or two.

I have them both for Genesis =)

Golden Axe was my first Genesis game. Echo I got around the time when SNES took over the lead. Both are interesting, though I could never get through Echo, I kept ending up back at the first level for some reason, all because I missed a jump somewhere.

I actually didn't think they were obscure, weren't they two of Sega's more popular non-Sonic titles?

I also have Echo for Dreamcast (you know, the ACTUAL game, not a burned copy of it), it was actually a really good game that no one played. There were a lot of really good Dreamcast games that no one played. It is too bad that Sega has not got around to re-releasing everything yet. Even the bad Dreamcast games (Like Blue Stinger) I found somewhat more fun than average PS2/GC/Xbox games.

Reggie did an interview with MTV: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/154673 ... ndex.jhtml

To summarize:

-There will be a special gift sent through Connect24 before Christmas. It is a big surprise that he doesn't want to ruin.
-Expect a lot of Wii announcements in January
-Virtual Console Mondays: 1-5 games will be released every monday.
-Big name VC titles will be released between the releases of Big name Wii titles rather than at the same time (good spacing).
-Nintendo is trying very hard to get their hands on the N64 mega-hit Goldeneye 007
-Critisized reviewers for undeserved low scores of Red Steel and Wii Sports (note that he is actually a bit innacurate on this, it is only North American reviewers that rated them low, they actually scored extremely high among Japanese and European reviewers. I agree with Reggie on this though, Red Steel and Wii sports are easily the 2nd and 3rd most popular games on Wii despite being the two lowest scored games of the launch titles.).

All of the rest is old information (such as the sales, 600K, etc...)

I haven't, actually. Though it is an odd game, I am not sure how to judge it. People say it is a lot of fun, but American review sites hate it, on the other hand it is getting extremely high scores from Japanese and European reviewers.

It's the worst of the games that I got (zelda, trauma center, rayman, and red steel), but that isn't saying much since the other games are UBER AMAZING. I recommend a rental first, but I like it..... graphics are good, shotting people is fun, and the swordplay is the weakest part of the game, but it's kind of fun still.
Yeah, I agree with you there, Trauma Center, Rayman, and Zelda are all amazing. Those are my recommended Wii launch titles, none of them will dissapoint. Also, if you are a VC game buyer and want a good VC game that a lot of people will enjoy, get Bomberman 93; it is a really fun game. Also, don't forget to give Sega some love too =)

OK, Ristar totally kicked ass. So for this week, Ristar seems like by far the best purchase. If you are into puzzle games, Columns would be a good second choice (though I do not personally recommend it).

Nintendo is being incredibly lame with their own releases (even though I understand their reasonings). The Genesis and Turbographx 16 games are MUCH better.

OK, I am getting VERY frustrated now. It is about 5:50 AM, I went out before 5:00 AM with a few friends to scout out the stores, because shipments are coming today or tomorrow, there are people camping out with blankets and stuff at Futureshop (opens at 9:00) and EB games (opens at 10:00). It is getting crazier and crazier; hopefully the craziness will end after Christmas. I didn't even make an attempt to line up, there were at least 10 people in each line, that means there is a good chance that even if a shipment does come in, I wouldn't get one.

I have a good friend as a manager at EB and a bunch of guys I know around town and I had to go and freakin' line up to get mine 'cause they were all told they weren't able to hold one for anyone, even themselves. It's crazy this year. I mean, how often do you hear about people lining up for a system (they're lining up for the PS3 as well) a month after launch?

Hey, I am friends with all of the EB games and Futureshop managers (all of them have partied many times at my place before), and they haven't done me any favours either. They have to remain this way or it could hurt their business. Though I have heard of corrupt managers doing people favours in the past (although these are claims made on the IGN boards).

Wow! Nice VC games to be released on Christmas Day:

1) Super Castlevania
2) R-Type
3) Super Mario Brothers
4) Toejam and Earl
5) Street Fighter 2

Now I just need to get a Wii. I can't WAIT to play Super Castlevania again! R-Type also kicks ass, I played the original on Sega Master System, this version is the Turbo-Graphx 16 version though. Toejam and Ear is one of the most underated titles ever, it was a lot of fun back on the Genesis. Those three titles I am getting for sure.

They have to follow the company rules. If their district managers find out that they held one, they can (and will) get fired over it. EB isn't exactly employee-friendly, they're very hard on their employees

And the TG-16 version of R-Type is the best one, so that's a good d'load
