The DS is easily one of the best multiplayer systems ever created. Walking into the student lounge at my university, it is almost guaranteed that you'll find people playing multiplayer on the DS. A few profs own them as well (though almost everyone who owns a DS around here owns a DS Lite, they are much more popular than the original DS). Anyways, there is also the online factor, the system is hugely popular as an online system as well.
When going to the Student Union Student Lounge, people have Metroid, Mario Kart, and a lot of others, but the game that seems to get played the most are New Super Mario Brothers Mini games (Mario Kart is also very popular); Mario Party consists of a lot of those types of games. It would make a lot of sense, in my opinion, for Nintendo to release a DS version of Mario Party, much more sense than it did to release all those Gamecube and N64 ones. I bet they could sell 3 million+ copies of it on DS. They also need more simulation type games along the lines of Animal Crossing and Nintendogs which have combined sold over 16 million units worldwide.
The thing about the DS is that the games on it appeal strongly to adults and are fine for younger audiences to play as well (unlike the typical Mature rated games which totally does not describe the people who actually play them). That's why they are selling so well, in my opinion.
