  • IGN rates their top 25 videogame franchises

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

Now, the top 3 aside which I think most will agree with (#4 I really like, but would not consider even a top 10), I pretty much disagree with the entire list =)

Sims and Pokemon should have been ranked #4 and #5; the two franchises that got those two positions are popular, but neither are of the extremely popular franchises. Sims and Pokemon have sold tens of millions of copies each (just like the top 3). They are obviously much more talked about, and much more popular than #4 and #5. GTA also should have been #6. Sonic also got a undeservedly low position, particularly when tens of millions have sold under that franchise as well, and it was about as popular as Mario for years.

I do think that some Franchises should not be in the top 25 at all, examples are: Star Wars, Donkey Kong, Half Life, Madden, Dungeons and Dragons, and Virtua Fighter when there are OBVIOUS series which are much more popular and not on the list: James Bond, Halo, Mario Kart, Sim City, Dragon Warrior, and Smash Brothers to name a few.

Arguing against this kind of thing is like arguing against anything really subjective, like a review, but man, they really got it wrong.

They omitted Halo! Halo! Halo, GTA and the Sims were the most important franchises of the last generation. That GTA and the Sims didn't place higher, and that Halo didn't place at all, is criminal.

Also, the Chrono series? I loved Trigger, but what the fuck!

Cross ruled all ass as well. When you have two of the best console RPGs ever, it's a great series, even if they are the only two games in the series

I think the gaming sites just pull out a top-10 or top-X feature when the real features are running low. It generate discussion, because there's always disagreement, and people always like to read short blurbs about games they like.

HL should be higher, too, IMO.

I think IGN just omitted Halo to see how many people would lose their shit over it. Either that or it's required that the series have three games out now, I don't know. Still, it's a no brainer to include it in that list.

I agree with most of your last paragraph, Seeker, except for Star Wars and James Bond. While Goldeneye revolutionized console FPSs (and FPSs in general), how many other great games has the liscence spawned? Star Wars has had many A titles for several platforms including: the 'Super' trilogy (SNES), KOTOR (Xbox/PC), Rogue Squadron (N64/GC), Battlefront (Multi), and more recently the Lego Star Wars games (Multi). I've also heard people rave in the past about X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter for the PC, but I never played it.

Good point on Starwars, I take back my statement, for some reason I was only thinking of the Lego series and some bad PC titles from the 90's, I was not thinking of massively popular games like Knights of the Old Republic =P

Though I will add that Chrono Trigger should not be on there, Chrono Trigger itself was popular, but the next game was a flop.

My opinion on Bond stands, Goldeneye 007 was an extremely popular game. It revolutionized not only first person shooters, but also multiplayer games in general. In fact, I do not think that any multiplayer game, aside from World of Warcraft and possibly Mario Kart 64, has been as popular since. On top of Goldeneye there has also been Nightfire, Everything or Nothing, and the World is Not Enough. All three of which sold well, and did quite well with the critics. Then there were a number of other Bond titles, not quite as popular (such as From Russia with Love, Agent Under Fire, Golden Eye, and Tomorrow Never Dies) which added beef to the series.

X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, for the time, ruled all ass. There was nothing that deep as a space fighter (Wing Commander was a lot of show with little substance) and it took ya right into the Star Wars universe. Outdated and crappy now, but amazing back then. Even Rebel Assault 2 was fun back then when it first came out, but it's complete garbage now

I totally disagree with you there Zeus =)

Those are the crappy old star wars games I was talking about; I never liked them. There was one feature that I liked, and that was getting cult ranks or something from guys in cloaks associated with the dark side. I don't know, haven't played them since I was a kid.
