Weak, he was always such a clean cut super-hero. >_>

The Death of Captain America
On his way to an arraignment at the Federal Courthouse in New York City, Captain America was shot in the right shoulder by a sniper's bullet. Several subsequent shots were fired point blank at Rogers by Sharon Carter, brainwashed by Dr. Faustus who was allied with the Red Skull. Sharon, unaware of her actions and concealed by the crowd during the shooting, escorted Rogers to the hospital while the Falcon and the Winter Soldier subdued the sniper, Crossbones (Brock Rumlow). Captain America was pronounced dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital. Sharon's memory was restored by a keyword spoken by the Red Skull's daughter, Sin (Sinthia Shmidt).

For those interested I am close to having everything to do with the Civil War at this point. I am only missing a few comics. Note I am talking of having all of it in file format on my comp, not the comics themselves.

Civil war was crap and a brutalization of character. It was just painful to read especially the ending which was some of the worst crap I have read in a long while. and this is from a guy who normally loves Mark Millar's work....Annihilation totally kicked it's ass six ways to sunday

Nah, because Speedball totally needed to become, you know, an *EMO KID WHOSE ARMOR CUTS HIM* before he can use his powers.

I haven't read any of the comics, but I was offended just based on that. Let Speedy be Speedy, for Chrissake! Enough emo drama in the Marvel Universe as it is.

Marvel's been going downhill since they depended on crossovers, and since Image took all of their good artists and story writers 10 years ago.

GEN 13!!! w00t w00t!

Yeah I was surprised that you guys didn't hear about this last week when they made it official (or according to Digg, they didn't really kill him.)

I don't know, I don't read comics any more so I have no idea what to say. It's Marvel's answer to DC killing off Superman in the 90's and Bane incapacitating Batman.

DC did it first, Marvel is just trying to follow.

they acually revived Gen-13 wth the recent wildstorm reboot that has some pretty good books like Stormwatch PHD which is written by Chris Gage who wrote 2 seasons of Law & Order SVU, episodes of Numbers, House, and ones. Easily the best writer in comics right now. really quite amazing...

And I can tell you from being friends with Ed Brubaker (The guy that writes Captain America and who has been setting up this storyline since he started the book o vver 2 years ago (the death storyline was moved up 6 months due to civil war but it was going to happen anyway) He is dead. that's right cap is dead. they do the autopsy next issue just to prove it.

yep but a lot of people also got scared away by the speculator boom in the 90's. it's actually interesting that magazines like wizard and comic buyers guide have a larger distribution than almost any comic. it's sad for me being omeone that still loves the medium but it is true. although thans to the success of movies and video games based on comics (Played The Darknes at wondercon 2 weeks ago....shitloads of awesome) the comic market has been increasing rather than declining again with 2006 being the best year since the speculator boom crashed

The story tellers and artists are certainly talented. Glad to hear things are looking up.

Yeah it's interesting before it was all about the artwork in the 90's and really some great gems were overlooked. (Want a good comic....Possibly the greatest epic ever told was a 90's comic....Starman by James Robinson. One of the most human books ever written about superheroes and looked at as one f the greatest comics of all time along the lines of Sandman. other than that though....the 90's were awful with the death of superman and other dreck like it. There were some gems though The Flash was a consistenty good read as well as Grant Morrisons Justice League and X-men....that guy is so mindbendingly insane his stories end up as either classics or confusing messes.....Like the end of his X-men run where the villain was Xorn's twin pretending to be Xonrn Pretending to e Magneto Pretendng to be Xorn......GAH!!!! Now days there is quality all over the place. Christos Gage is the best writer in comics with Strmwatch. Marvel is putting out sme amazing cosmic stories and Peter David on X-Factor.....Plus their ext big epic event for this summer looks very promising in World War Hulk.

Yes World War Hulk. Reed Richards, Xavier, Iron Man, Black Panther, Namor, and Black Bolt dedcided the Hulk was too dangerous. So they shot him into space. he landed on a planet, fought in i's arena overthrew it's tyranical rules and became it's king.....then the ship they sent him to the planet on exploded and destroyed most of the planet....so now he and his gladiator buddies that survived are coming back to earth for a little revenge.....HULK SMASH PUNY CIVIL WAR! That looks very promising long with Annihilation :Conquest the second anihilation cosmic story. the first was one of the best comics in years and turned Nova into one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe.

DC has some great stuff too. Justice League of america from Brad Meltzer has had a fun and interesting start. Not to mention Justice Society of America which is one of the best looking and best reading series in the last few years. 52 which was the weekly series this past year has had so much payoff in the last few weeks that every storyline is building to a crecendo of fun adventure and excitement....Plus Animal Man rules all....

Manhunter is the little title that could. It's been cancelled 3 times due to low sales (The market really isn't friendly to new characters....It's been one of the best written titles on the shelves over the ast few years. This last year saw the entrance of a new Blue Beetle series with an all new character in the suit which is a fantastic funny and smart read that can be shared with yer kids. Birds of Prey is another fantastic book month in and month out...

It's a great time to be a comic fan. While there is still some horrid crap out there (Anything written by Judd Winick) There is also some amazing stuff being put out like Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters (Sounds lame but was absolutely amazing) Jonah Hex (One of the best westerns out there. (Fantastic Book) Buffy the vampire Slayer :Season 8 (Yes the 8th season of buffy is being written by joss and put out as a comic. First issue came out last week) Another Serenity Miniseries (Joss Again) An Angel season 6 is planned as well (Go Joss Go) There are a ton more good books and now is a great time to hit up a local comic shop and check out some trades...

Oh yeah, I'm loving comics right now. Plus, having money to actually buy them is nice since I was poor in high school and college. :)

what are you buying right now lox? I've hit about $60 a week at this point and am happy as I can be with it. Of course for me it's a massive tax wrte off at the ed of the year which totally kicks ass....research materials

You're a jerk with your "research materials"!

I'm reading Y: The Last Man, Exiles, a few Batman books, Green Lantern, JLA, Astonishing Xmen (just started picking it up to see if it's any good), Wolverine Origins, 52, I've been reading Civil War just to keep up on it. I loved the original Gen-13 so I've been reading the new one. I'm not loving it though. It's either because the characters are too different from the ones I used to read or it's just not as good. I'm not sure. heh I think there's more, but darned if I remember. :)

I'm always on the lookout for some good books though. I've almost picked up Jonah Hex a bunch of times. I might have to start now. I'll take a look at some of the other stuff you mentioned.

Yeah Jonah Hex is definitely a damn good read. actually there are a few twriters you can guarantee quality with. Chris Gage (Stormwatch, Union Jack.....the Union Jack miniseries iss one of the best comics I've read in years, Deadshot etc.)

Gail Simone (Welcome to Tranquility, Birds of Prey, Gen 13 (And yeah it is because the charcters are different)

Marc Andreyko (Manhunter s easily the most consistently good books on the shelf, the nigtwing anual is pretty good too)

Geoff Johns (Green Lantern, Action Comics, BOOSTER FREAKING GOLD, JSA)

Tad Williams (Aquaman, The Next, Helmet of Fate : bis the Invincible. His aquaman issue was great in that he's going to be returning aquaman to being aquaman. art is a little to cartony though)

there is a lot of good right now....

I miss Gen X. It was a great idea that fizzled with characters that didn't get fleshed out, and some dumb storylines. Same with X-Men 2099.

So, why was there a "boom" in comic books during the 90's? I just started reading them back then because, well, I liked comics, and I figured it was time to get into them regularly.

It's what's called the speculator boom. it's when every book had like 9 variant covers and chrome foiland inflated the price and value of comics.....look in your local comic shops quarter bin. that's all stuff that was selling huge numbers in the 90's caused the value of everything to plummet and killed the comic market which is why you see prices going up as well in the 90's a focus especially from marvel and image on looks rather than content with crap like the spider man clone saga, maximum carnage, cable etc.

And sine if you liked Gen X you should check out X-factor. M is one of the main characters in it but it is a serious but funny detective agency book that is fantastically well told....also New X-Men Academy X had a very similar feel to it. until the new creative team came on and turned it into a generic x-book
