Check the date on that article you posted, it's from several years ago. But I guess it was in decline between early PSX generation to mid PS2 generation.

Things have changed though, in 2005 the Industry grew 13.9% and then in 2006 it grew 37.8%. It seems though, that 2006 had the highest sales that the Japanese Industry has seen since 1997 (which was the peak year).

Just a note, with NPD's latest figures for April (360,000, WAY in first place of the thee next-gen consoles, but second behind the distant first DS which sold 471,000, third place overall was the PS2 which sold 193K), Wii is officially at 7.3 million units. Numbers from Europe are missing since the end of March, as well as the last 17 of North America. At this point in time, including the last month and a half of European sales (which is probably about 500,000) and the last 17 days of North American sales (which is probably 200,000) and Wii should have sales of approximately 8 million right now, that'll be within 2 million units of the Xbox 360 which has been out for 18 months.


Here's some Canada stats, where Wii reigns supreme. Finally Nintendo is getting good shipment numbers to this country. Again, I am unsure if NPD includes Canada's numbers with US's numbers or not, if they don't then Wii is officially close to 7.35 million.
