Afro Samurai

This may not have been on anyone's radar, but it was a surprisingly good anime.

The premise is a futuristic Japan where the samurai is still the most feared warrior in existence. Every fighter in the world is striving to attain the #1 Headband-- a headband that labels the weared as a god. The only one who can challenge the #1 is he who wears the #2 headband-- a person who is hunted by every assassin known to man for this reason. You follow the story of the Afro Samurai-- the man who holds the #2 band (voiced by Samuel L Jackson)

It's strange on many levels, seeing someone fight with swords and then talk on cell phones...

I will warn this isn't a japanese cartoon...it's an encouraging attempt at more american born anime. I'd recommend you guys check it out...it was surprisingly decent.

It's more of a marriage between US/Japan material. It's based on a Japanese manga and produced by a Japanese company, but voiced by Americans. Looks like it's only 5 episodes, but they are trying to market it pretty heavily into film and a video game. (One million dollars per episode? WTF?)

I gotcha, and yeah-- it was a miniseries if anything...I viewed it more like a 2 hour movie that interrupted for credits a few times.

I was surprised that it had no Japanese voices at all...and at the very end of the credits there's the "Brought to you by the Spike Channel"

It's got a pretty damn cool premise though, and the world itself is so...different.

Keanu is not a working actor per se. He does what, one film every 18 months or so then spends the rest of his time touring with his band.

There's a reason you see Sam Jackson in so many movies (he's done what, 1000 by now?) he does anything that'll make him money. It really is about the money for him. Not necessarily a bad thing, especially for a guy who didn't make it big 'til he was 42. But not really the type who would forego money simply 'cause he liked a role
