I think a next-gen remake wouldn't be cost-effective.

Eric, it is unlike you to be SO late to discover announcements like these ones =)

Especially when they were posted here (with screenshots) like 2-3 months ago =P

I do like the FF8ish piano theme on that page though, hopefully they'll include similar remakes of songs throughout the game. It had some of the best tunes in the series.

On a side note, the story has been redone for the game, it will be expanded considerably. For those who are purists, this might not be your game, as this is more like a story based on the original. The story is being updated to fit todays Final Fantasy standards. They won't pass up on releasing an update to FF6 either, it will probably be announced before the end of this year or early next (they just released a GBA remake of it).

Might be on the Wii. Development ain't THAT high on that system and it would look RE4 level or better. That would be fine by me.

I had forgotten about the Wii. But there's not just coding development costs, producing all of that content is expensive, too. Making it look at the level of RE4 might also be cost-prohibitive.

Does brought up to today's FF standard mean Zeromus will now try to become a God and Cecil will have some kind of dysfunctional past?

But at the same time, rather than charging $30 they could charge $50. Sell 200,000 units and you're looking at $4M difference.

I think Square's strategy is to do the re-releases on handhelds only. Too bad, I really think a remake of this magnitude could do very well for them. I know the FF remakes for the PSX did very well (they're all Greatest Hits) but I guess the cost-benefit from their point of view makes it not worth it.

The cheaper version might sold a lot more than the more expensive version.

A FF remake on the Wii would look very outdated unless they spend a lot more money on it. You can't just slap SNES graphics and add a FMV and expect people to get fooled by that.

A game that looks better than RE4 (and likely much better since it doesn't need to be fully 3D) would be perfectly fine from a graphics point of view.

It's not like we're talking about PSX-level graphics here. The Wii is twice as powerful as the 'Cube and I don't remember too many people complaining about the graphics of the games on that. It would look at least as good as Zelda Twilight don't forget

Why bother to make new games when you can port the old FFs over and over again? I swear, is this the 3rd or 4th system they've ported over to?

It's not a port, it's a remake based on the original; it won't have the same script either, instead it will have a new expanded script.

I don't think you can repair the original. Though I haven't played any of the Japanese-only releases (2/3/5), I'd have to say that FF4 had some of the worst story of any FF game.

I've never seen death being used to such a degree to make it a complete cheap cliche. The point of killing off somebody is that THEY DON'T COME BACK! And even if they kept them dead, they killed off (or at least implied that they died) so many characters that it came off as a weak plot device.

dude sine.....I'm a comic book fan. I know death as a weak plot device more intimately than you could even fathom....FFIV was not that bad when it came down to it. The weakness of that game was to have a great villain up till the end of the game where suddenly.....Oh wait.....he was never really that bad a guy....the real badguy is this nasty porny I wish I was Cthulu pansy demon guy. That's what irked me....

So far as death being a cheap plot device, because so many people supposed to have 'died' and come back, it's pretty clear it's not meant to be taken seriously to begin with. It's sort of like how in every Hong Kong manga every person who falls off a cliff always gets caught on a tree somewhere and escape death, so you can have 10 guys fall of cliffs but you're never expecting them to stay dead, so it's not even a plot device anymore, more like something that just happens.
