  • Bioshock gets a 10 from 1up

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

I've been on the fence of this one for a bit, I just don't want to play yet another FPS. But it's hard to ignore this from a site which you respect their reviews.

Getting kick-ass ratings from everyone it seems:

1up isn't really a site I would consider respectable. Most of what I hear about them is that they give reviews based on who advertises on their website. I have also read a few articles from their website, low quality compared to IGN and Gamespot.

Gamespot I like, but they slaughter IGN. If you want a website that caters to the publishers and goes by the money they spend, go there. Because of the fact they're bitches they get lots of decent features, but they don't touch 1up

IGN is easily the top site out there, and easily the best place to get reliable news and reviews. Also, if IGN went by who advertised the most on their website, then Bully (for example) would have got a 10/10 instead of an 8.8 (Gamespot gave it an 8.7). 1up on the otherhand bent over and gave the game a 10; prostitutes.

Could an admin please split this review site discussion into its own thread?

Seeker's whoring for IGN and constant and unfounded ranting against 1UP sends me into a flying rage, and I don't want my Bioshock happy place ruined.

And on the topic: Bioshock, game of the year, CONFIRMED.

(I will recant come Halo 3's release, no doubt)

Split thread seconded.

I've already made it clear how much I'm looking forward to Bioshock. We'll talk later (much later for me).

1up is the best gaming site out there. Great staff, great blogs, great podcasts, and the 1up Show FTW.

As for the reviews, the Bully review was one of three perspectives from EGM. I think the others were 9 and 8.5. The site, its podcasts, and its print publications featured many ads for Brooktown High and Project Slypheed, which they scored 4.0 and 7.5. Your theory is broken.

Bah, I ain't splitting the thread (maybe Kup will)...

Besides which, Bioshock got a 9.7 from IGN, so Seeker can sit on his wiimote and rotate!

Yes, but it's not a 10! ADVERTISING BOUGHT THOSE LAST 0.3 POINTS

is bioshock even advertised there? the only place I've seen it advertised it at destructoid and their advertisement is epic in size and scale. I sat at 1up for a couple minutes and refreshed their frontpage where there were no bioshock adverts. I don't know if there were any in the past.... but I hear 1up has been a little short on cash, if that helps substantiate their willingness to trade moneys for favourable reviews.

For Christ's sake don't give Seek ammunition!

Note that it's 1UP's parent company that's short of cash: given 1UP's traffic, EGM & GFW's circulation, and reasonable staffing levels, I can't imagine that they're in any trouble. Worst case scenario I can see would be Ziff selling the games division (wouldn't be much left of Ziff if they did, though!).

(oh, and Bioshock ads ran at 1UP for a couple of days earlier in the week)

EVIDENCE! Bioshock is really a 6.5! You blew our fucking cover, Drew!

Incidentally, IGN is sooooooo three years ago.

Nevermind that 1Up doesn't use decimals for their scores. Always thought to be a dumb idea anyway. They are opinions, people. What the fuck is the difference between 9.5 and 9.6? How can you say that the score is that exact? This isn't a MOS, so how is one person supposed to do that?

Maximum of 10 points of granularity on a score, please.

I've never really read much on 1up.com, but IGN's reviews have always seemed fair and well explained in their ratings.

I was thinking of getting Blue Dragon before I read their review-- while they gave it a decent score, they told me what I feared-- it's basically the same shit as before, horrible story, and a snooze for the first disc. They've totally destroyed other games that were just bad. I originally was looking at Bullet Witch on the "Must haves for 2007" and it turned out to be an utter, buggy, horribly coded piece of shit.
