Wii shoots past DS in sales, PS3 catches up to Xbox 360

US sales of the Wii are up as shipments begin to increase leading into the Holiday season. PS3, although still doing quite badly, has managed to catch up to the Xbox 360 in sales for the month of July. July 12th the discontinued model of the PS3 received a pricedrop, and likely is what led to the increase in sales.

DS - 405,000
PS2 - 221,000
Xbox 360 - 169,000

360 also has had a price drop... and new models now have HDMI capabilities (the Premium, not the Elite). Although I bet the warranty extension announcement (that 100% of consoles built as of May are defective) hurts things.

The 360 had its price drop in August, so the NPD numbers for July don't reflect that. Personally, I think it's pretty fucking sad that the PS3 with a price cut can't outsell the 360....and even sadder that the p.o.s. Wii, which has no bloody games to play, is outselling both of em combined...

Xbox 360 sales are down from 206K sold last year during the same month, while PS2 saw a slight drop from 240K, but overall the videogame industry saw a 43% increase over its July 2006 sales.

Maybe people aren't buying Sony's game... it's pretty well known the price drop is only so they can liquidate their backlog of systems so they can sell a new version with less components (so cheaper to make) and slap a bigger HDD on it and sell it at the same price as before. Sony realized they have too much shit inside the console making it cost too much so they've tried stripping out anything they could-- I forget what but I know the PS2 compatibility went right out.

I forget the figures exactly, but I do think the PS3's manufacturing price has dropped about $170 in the past few months due the ridding the system of the PS2 chips and newer less costly components.
