  • Earthbound coming to VC thanks to massive EB fansite

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

Essentially the creators of the world's largest Earthbound fansite, Starmen.net, have been recognized by NoA. NoA is excited about playing their fan translated version of Mother 3. The group delivered to Nintendo a massive collection of Earthbound fan art from around the world along with handmade figurines. The word has been given that Earthbound can be expected to be released on VC soon and that the success of its sales will be a determining point on the priority value of Mother 3's official North American translation. Earthbound is one of those titles that has an incredibly hardcore fanbase, and you can find Earthbound fans everywhere. I know there are others here, and it is up to us to pay our 8 dollars, get a game we love, and get a game we want here as fast as possible!

Nintendo has recognized them in their October edition of Nintendo Power which is probably when to expect the game, only another month! =)

ON this issue, Nintendo can kiss my ass. I will not in any way contribute money to them for fucking me on this release. If I get it, it will only be used, that way they don't profit. I may not even get it, I already have a flash card and will just put the translated ROM on there.

There's no such thing with that company as listening to its fanbase. There have been numerous articles, fan mail, responses by Nintendo marketing personnel to questions asked by numerous websites and magazines, and flat-out begging for years regarding this franchise. If they haven't gotten the hint yet, they ain't ever gonna get the fact that this game was a sleeper hit and only really became popular after it had gone out of print.

While I agree with Zeus, I'm still getting it on VC because I'm that much of an Earthbound whore.

No videogame publisher is in the business to create their products for thieves to steal. No videogame development team is going to get funding for a game series that doesn't profit. Essentially, if Earthbound becomes a profitable franchise for Nintendo then there will be more games. The more units the virtual console game sells the more likely Nintendo is going to release Mother 3 over here officially. The more Mother 3 sells, the more likely it is that we'll see Mother 4, or perhaps even completetion of the original N64 Mother 3.

Capcom was the same with the Phoenix Wright series, the fans didn't steal it, they bought it, and that's why we're about to get a third one, and more are being developed. Game series that don't sell well go the way of the Soul Blazer series, and their development teams go the way of Quintet; though with this new trend of selling old games via the Virtual Console and its clones might even give that series another shot; and when Terranigma comes to Virtual Console, expect to see another message like this.

I'm getting the VC title regardless, I need it, my North American SNES has been broken down for quite some time now. As an Earthbound whore, I must have it on every single platform possible, and I want to see the series getting much more attention =)

I've never actually played earthbound before. I've heard oracle gush over it, but how good is it REALLY?

It's one of the few timeless games developed back during the 16 bit era. I also count it among the top three 16 bit RPGs, the other two being Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger; both released around the same time period. Essentially it is an RPG where you spend most of your time in towns that resemble our own, it has the best encounter system currently available in RPGs, and has a very unique and cool art style. It is also one of those games that will always have fans, 12 years later there is still a similar sized hardcore fanbase, probably more fans now than before.

About FF2/4j quality, a slight notch below FF3/6j and Chrono Trigger. IOW, one of the best RPGs on the SNES, which is saying a lot. But you have to get past the drab graphics and kiddish feel, it's really much better and deeper than it looks

I agree...and keep the Americans out of this thread, those Earthbound-hating bastards :-)

Fuck that, it's WAY better than FF4. Dude, seriously, would there even be a question as to which game you would rather play right now between just FF4 and fucking awesome Earthbound!?

Yes. I adored FF4 and Earthbound equally

I don't know, I just couldn't get into FF4 like I did Earthbound, FF6, Chrono Trigger, and other RPGs from the 16-bit era. FF4 felt like it was missing something that other RPGs of the time (like Phantasy Star) had.
