Just wondering if it was safe to buy an X-Box 360 yet, with all the horror stories I've heard about systems breaking horribly and such. I've been a bit gun shy.

Safe to buy an X-Box 360 yet?
- Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.
Anything with a newer manufacture date of...I think...July 07, should be fine. "360 failures always spike when a game worth playing comes out, which (to me) seems to imply that most of the three-sixties installed in homes currently are used as decoration. You'll recall that it happened with Forza 2 and the sequel to Guitar Hero, as well. It's incredible that we are in a situation where every time a worthwhile game sees release, it sweeps through the entire userbase with a scythe. Literally incredible, as in, I can't fucking believe it. It's like flipping a coin, and every time it comes up heads four hundred dollars catches on fire."
I'm not sure if the newer 360s are that much more failure-resistant than the old ones - they certainly might be - but the failures definitely haven't stopped in general. Just a heads-up.

That's because most people who DO have Xbox's don't play them daily... maybe weekly but doubtfully that.
Before Bioshock came out I had barely used my 360 as anything other than a DVD player for a month or so. So yeah, when good games come out THEN people notice that their system fried. Doesn't surprise me, you'll find that with any console. How many Wii's are decoration right now (or have been recently) until decent games come out? Something you pulled out to show friends and then back in the corner it went. Obviously no one here's like that, but we're not the majority of console owners.
Haven't heard complaints from any replacements since they "fixed" the problem-- which literally consists of bigger heatsink on the GPU and having it seated more firmly to the chip. Gotta suck to know $15 worth of parts is destroying your $400 system... for both users and Microsoft.

Whatever, man. I have plenty of games to play on the 360 already. Hell, even the XBox Arcade has some really good stuff. Mutant Storm Reloaded is awesome, and sometimes I play Space Giraffe (big fan of Llamatron) or Luminus (big fan of Rez).

Perhaps this can shine some light on why I get frustrated with you - I surely don't care about how many 360 games you have. Eric might, who knows? I'm more concerned about whether or not his money is going to end up as a fantastic set of redrings. Personally, I don't know if I can recommend buying a 360 yet - I can easily see a situation where the replacements end up just as fried in a year as all the originals did. Microsoft still, in my opinion, completely falls down on their QA probably more than half the time.
But Eric can make his own determination, and maybe the abundance of games you've mentioned would be more of a determination than the quality issues so frequently mentioned. I really don't know, and have no desire to get called "emo" again, so, outski for the Nevarooni for now.

Not everyone may be comfortable purchasing MS points and buying digital copies of games. I know people at work that STILL refuse to purchase anything online. XBL is awesome, and so are a LOT of the 360 games. I can definitely recommend the 360 as a sweet, sweet fucking platform and was very very happy while mine was working!
That being said, if I end up keeping the one I get back and it breaks again, I doubt I'm buying another Microsoft gaming platform in the near future. It killed me to see that redring not going away when I really wanted to play Fight Night.

XBL is doing quite well for them, particularly in the d'loading department. I just want the PSN to come in and do extremely well so Microshaft will finally have Gold for free. Mine just ran out yesterday and it's against my personal religion to pay for a game and then have to pay again to play it online. Fucking stupid IMO
