I (like probably a few other people) am considering purchasing the new $400 model in the near future. If you have a few minutes, in short, can you give a run down on the sorts of things (in terms of software) that are worth looking at for the PS3 currently? You said, in another thread, something about high quality downloadable software, that would be a major selling point for me.

PS1 ports - Tekken 2, Syphon Fliter, Crash Bandicoot, Medievil, Jumping Flash, Destruction Derby, Rally Cross, JetMoto, 2XTreme, Wipeout, Hot Shots Golf 2, Cool Boarders, and Castlevania:Symphony of the Night. (all these games can be played, upscaled on the Ps3, or transfered to the PSP to be played on there too)

Downloadable Games - Everyday Shooter, Go! Sports Ski, Loco Roco Cocoreccho!, High Stakes on the Vegas Strip: Poker Edition, PixelJunk Racers, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix (no link required, I assume), Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Warhawk, Piyotama, Gripshift 2.0, Nucleus, Super Stardust, Go! Puzzle Game (there are two more types of puzzle games in this one game, but I could not find an adequate trailer), Championship Sprint, Joust, Rampage: World Tour, Rampart, Calling All Cars, Super Rub-A-Dub, Gauntlet 2, Mortal Kombat 2, Gran Turismo HD 1.2 (free but content bare), flOw, Q*Bert, Go! Sudoku, Lemings, Blast Factor, and Cash Guns Chaos DLX

I have warhawk, everyday shooter, and calling all cars and can tell you that they are all very high quality games. Everyday Shooter may SEEM like it is just geometry wars (actually, a lot of the games on there seem like geometry wars/robotron), but it is much more reliant on the music in the level you are playing (each level has different music) to help string together combos and kill off the mass amounts of enemies streaming at you. There's no big "oh shit" bomb to kill everyone on the screen, so you have to rely on the nuances of the game to survive. It's super hard and Im terrible at it, but the graphics and sound design are so stylized that it's hard to ignore once it's in your library. I don't have any of the PS1 games, but I soon wish to own Jumping Flash, and I'll tell you how the ps3 looks with it and the psp.

Also, there's an interesting function on the ps3. Along with the 360-like ability to watch certain video files (in this case mpeg-4 I think) from your PC on the ps3, you can stream them to your psp over the wireless internets. So if you're at university or work or whatever, and you want to watch some harvey birdman or venture brothers episodes, you can whip out the ol' psp and as long as you've got your ps3 and computer still running at home, you can watch movies to your heart's content. I thought this function was a little nifty.

also, in terms of software.... I have no plans on buying any ps3 game this holiday season. There are some interesting games coming out: Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Haze, and Eye of Judgment (literally, that's how the spelled it) all look interesting, but nothing that really pulls me in like Mario Galaxy. Ninja Gaiden Sigma, a reworking of the xbox's Ninja Gaiden is also out on the PSN, I forgot to mention that.

FlOw and Loco Roco Cocoreccho! are the only other PSN games that I kind of wanted to buy, but I heard that they were both more like glorified screen savers, but slightly navigable with the (yeah, I'm going to say it) terrible sixaxis motion controls. The Japanese PSN has some really cool (and many, many more)PS1 titles on it, and you can somewhat easily (and entirely at no cost) make a secondary japanese PSN account on your ps3 to check out and potentially download games from that region's store. I downloaded some game with a cat that you kind of tell what to do. It's all in japanese, so I understand none of it, but it was free. I am frightened to download any of their ps1 titles because I don't know if the sony police will track me down and kill my japanese account when I pay with my canadian credit card, or if the games will even work... I suppose the answer lives out there on the internet, but I got all those trailers for those games for you and now I'm feeling lazy, so find them yourself. So my conclusionary statement on this topic is that there are not really many good games out there for your buying pleasure either as PSN games or regular "you go buy these physically at a store" games.

Now on to what I think is the most important thing and what you guys think is nothing at all. The new 40GB SKU is rumoured to have no backwards compatibility at all. This is frightening, and the 80GB only has software BC, so both are silly offers to me. And now I'm done posting and will go play halo now.... bye.

Everyday Shooter, Flow, and the Loco Roco screensaver piqued my interest as far as d'loadable stuff. And Little Big Planet seems very exciting. Is that one coming this Xmas?

And I do agree that the 60GB model is the best one IMO. I want to retire my very tired PS2 if I'm getting a PS3. So many great games for the PS2 and there's likely to be some decent stuff through next Xmas you may as well have the backwards compatibility in it.

I personally have no interest in backwards compatability. My PS1 model still works excellently, and I expect the slimline PS2 to work similarly. So I think the 400 dollar model is absolutely perfect for people like me. Either way, 3-4 years down the road I will likely be upgrading the system when they come out with something more Wii-sized (I don't particularly like the size of the system).

Thanks for the posts Bovine, I quite appreciate it. I'm going to write comments further on the weekend.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to hit before christmas. The Home open beta is supposed to come out before christmas as well. I'm excited to see what they do with it and hope it just doesn't become an add supported phantasy star online lobby with some crappy games thrown in and a customizable apartment :/

Make sure you post the details on the PSN once you've had some decent time in it. I'm really curious and interested in how it's gonna be (and hopeful they bash M$ in the nuts and make Live free)

Sony announced price drops for Canada. Essentially the pricing will be equal in dollars to the American pricing.

I was at EB the other day and I asked him how much they were selling the PS3's for now. The 80GB was 499, and the 60GB was oddly 549. He could not tell me why.

Oh, that means the price drop is already in effect, I suppose it only targets the 40 and 80GB models.

They didn't get word on the 60GB drop right away. A day later (Thursday, if I'm not mistaken) the 60GB was down to $449.

For some reason I really would like to get one now but if I did, it would just be a BluRay player until MGS4 comes out.

Me too. I want to retire my first-gen PS2 and use it as a Blu-Ray player until AC, FF13, GTA4, etc. all come out. So, i may as well still wait, but it is becoming increadingly difficult to do so with the price cuts and 60GB versions going the way of the dodo.

I know it would be relatively useless if i got one now, but maybe i could make some use of it with downloadable games and the new home thing. I wish there was a must have game out now... well, GH3 is in a week...

I'll laugh when all of these games eventually become 360 ports down the road. It might take a year after the initial release, but I'll be patient and play my 50 other games for the Xbox 360 in the meantime.

He who laughs last...

there are NO GOOD movies for the bluray right now. I grabbed 300 and T2 and cannot bring myself to purchase any more because they are all just brutally bad. If you are lacking in the HiDef movie department, perhaps you should consider investing in the better deal that is the HD-DVD player.
Also, there is nothing coming out that peaks my interest. I grabbed a copy of motorstorm off of the ebay and am awaiting its arrival. The demo is fun, but I was not going to pay full price for it. If you're intensely desperate to play the new ratchet and clank before it drops to a budget price, that and uncharted are pretty much are all that are on the foreseeable horizon. You may speculate on whether MGS4 or FF13 become multiplatform, but they are games that will not be coming out until at the very earliest, next holiday season.

I was thinking of getting the HDDVD add-on, but it's pretty fucking loud.

Also, was it FF13 or MGS4 that had the "For PS3 ONLY!" tag at the end of the trailer at TGS?

I am mostly interested in the downloadable section of the PS3 at the moment, I will do my research before I purchase. I am also anticipating 20th Anniverary Final Fantasy remakes, of the PSX titles, for the PS3 to be announced in 1-2 years. Though I am uncertain of this because it is quite possible that Sony or Nintendo will release next generation handheld devices in the next couple of years which will be preferred; DS2 is probably on the horizon, the DS is getting close to maxing out in Japan, it's already sold in the area of the PS2/PSX/SNES totals (20 million). In North America and Europe though, it seems DS sales are continuing to climb, so it is hard to say when the announcement will be made.

Just a note though, ARM has the Cortex processors available which are about 1GHz, if they can get those cheap a couple years down the road, then that would be what the DS2 will use. The PSP uses a 222MHz processor, and the DS a 67MHz x 33MHz, just to give comparison.

I think they hit gold with the DS Lite, so I don't think so. Though, it is possible that they might release something for the Japanese market before the DS2 is released, because they may want to hold off on its release at this point due to the insanely high sales in the North American and European markets at the moment. There seems to be quite a line-up of software coming out for the DS still, the best games are still ahead (DQ9 and the FF4 and 5 annivesary editions).

I thought the gameboy advance SP was the pinnacle of that series, but they found it necessary to throw out a Micro, I think with the mad success of the DS that they will put out another version.

I think Nintendo was hoping that the Micro would do a lot better than it has done.

Who the hell knows what Nintendo is going to do any more, but I would be honestly surprised if they put out another iteration of the DS.

I wouldn't trust that rumour based solely on the fact that they say there is going to be no GBA slot. There is official DS software which requires usage of both DS and GBA slots. In addition, what do they mean by larger screens? The games are made for a specific resolution so this would cause some problems.

Though I can see a DS successor not having a GBA slot and higher resolution screens (as anyone would expect, imagine DS with VGA touch screens). There might be a new DS model released around the time of a new DS, which I predict is 2 years away from release unless the market proves to be larger than any of us previous thought; at this point, in 2 years the DS looks like it will will sell over 100 million units; though sales will slow down a lot in Japan as it has already passed the 20 million mark there, and there isn't really much further that a system can go after hitting 20 million in Japan.

They already released an upgraded DS and they're selling those almost as fast as they can make them. I really doubt we'll see anything other than new colours and maybe some very slight changes for the next two years or so.

The Micro was an attempt by Nintendo to increase the appeal of the GB and it failed miserably. It's no coincidence that it's iPoD Nano-sized. Thing was, it had a smaller screen than the SP and just wasn't as good overall not to mention more expensive. Their only real failure other than the Virtual Boy (you COULD argue the GC but with 20+ million sold, more of a disappointment than a failure)

That's Gamespot quoting an opinion of an analyst, and in the past couple of years the analysts gamespot has been quoting have not just been off the mark, but way off the board.

On the next gen DS..... I would really be surprised if it didn't possess a download center considering the Japanese market. Right now the mobile download market is moving the largest number of games. Granted, these games are cheaper than typical DS games, but it is something Nintendo won't ignore. The handheld market, in my opinion with this particular season aside (where we saw the release of hundreds of console games), has been more interesting than the console market in the past 2 years.

Though for the next DS I would really like to see something with iPhone power, in two years they should be able to manufacture that technology cheap enough; and hopefully battery technology allows for the 15+ hours of battery power in a small enough package.

No chance. Nintendo hasn't proven anything if not their insistence on game-only functions with their devices
