As I mentioned in another thread, my comp died this week. Ordered my new one, not a bad setup really, and I figure its all good, most of my media is on the external anyway. So I go to hook the external up upstairs on this computer and its working fine, and then as I start accessing something to watch it starts making odd noises, and soon its not accessing anymore. On that drive is about 250 gig of music, anime, wrestling, and manga. I just pray that the data is recoverable, the damn drive is less than half a year old. I sent them an email about it, as its still under warrenty. At least the new comp is bought.

And you even did the right thing and kept the stuff on a separate drive. That sucks ass. I always keep a secondary drive as backup for the real important stuff just in case.

That really sucks. I would freak if I lost all of my photos and stuff. Anything that is a "I'll go nuts if I lost this" is backed up on a SATA drive that I keep tucked away and use only for backing up. I also put it all onto 1-x DVDs since it's usually only pictures and some other smaller files. I then put the DVDs in a fire proof box that we have for our other personal papers. :)

I usually back up to DVD's as well, but I was out of blanks for long enough that once I got 100 more, I had close to 200 gig to back up and I just never got to it...that is a multi day process to back up that much. 8^(

Yeah, I have a file server with almost 10 years worth of MP3s on it. I've given up my CD collection for my digital media, so I keep a backup drive for it. The backup is recent, but that reminds me that I need to put in a weekly backup cron on it soon.

I've thought about RAID, but RAID updates your mistakes instantly. It's funny that the best way to back something up is to use another HD, not tape backup. Tape is actually more expensive.

I just got rid of my older PS2 (because someone got me one of the new "improved" platnum ones) and discovered that PS2 browser doesn't read PSX memory cards. Any PSX games in the system asks me if I want to format the card, I tried it on one of my cards without important files and it didn't do anything, it still asks the same thing. Electronics are pissing me off lately as well =)

I don't have my PS1 (the little white machine that works like a charm) either. It was a gift and I don't have the receipt.

Well I just got an email back on my external, they will replace it but they dont offer any data recovery. Does anyone know what Best Buy charges for something like that?
